The Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design Area offers students a full range of studio experiences in both traditional and non-traditional media. We focus on providing a framework for instruction in techniques and processes in conjunction with an emphasis on building personal themes and narratives. Our goal is to create an environment in which students are given the technical and critical support they need in order to develop, and continually refine, their own unique artistic vision and voice. The Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design Area services all five degree tracks offered by the Department of Art. We offer one introductory course entitled Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design I: Fabrication and Stone Setting. We offer four intermediate courses under the heading Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design II, Casting, Hollowware, Enameling and CAD for Jewelers. Advanced Special Topics in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design is our final course that provides students with an opportunity to develop a self-directed path of inquiry and creative activity. We strongly encourage students to integrate their experiences and expertise gained in other studio environments, as well as in other academic studies, into the design and creation of work created in our course offerings.
