One of the biggest benefits of a learner-led Socratic discussion? They aren’t simply learning how to answer a teacher’s questions. They’re learning how to think critically, ask good questions, listen well, respectfully disagree, defend their ideas, and communicate with confidence.

At Acton, the guide doesn’t stand at the front of the room handing out the “right” answers. Learners are challenged to think for themselves, wrestle with hard questions, learn from one another, and take ownership of the conversation.

Because the goal isn’t just to raise great students. It’s to raise independent thinkers, strong communicators, and capable young people prepared for the real world.

This is what a morning Socratic Launch can look like at Acton Academy Estero.

Our learners aren’t simply given answers or told what to believe about faith, character, or how they should live. They’re asked hard questions and challenged to think deeply, wrestle with their own answers, defend their reasoning, and listen to the perspectives of others.

Today’s questions included:

If Christianity is actually true, what difference should that make in the way you live your life?

Which area is hardest to change…
how you treat others, how you use your time, the choices you make when nobody is watching, how you respond when things go wrong, or what you choose to pursue?

And finally…
What is one thing following Jesus asks of you that is difficult to actually live out and what would living it out look like in your choices today?

These are big questions for young people. But they’re big questions for adults, too.

So we’ll leave you with the same challenge we gave our learners this morning: How would you answer them?

Meet the Monster of Distraction. 👹

Today our learners explored one of the sneakiest obstacles on a Hero’s Journey: the little distractions that quietly pull our attention away from what matters most.

Through a Stroop-style challenge, they got to experience firsthand what happens when the brain receives competing information—and how much intentional effort it can take to stay focused on the actual goal.

The lesson: distraction says, “Just one more minute… this is more interesting… I’ll come back to it.”
Intentionality says, “Remember what matters most.”

At Acton, we don’t just tell learners to focus. We give them opportunities to understand how their minds work, recognize the “monsters” that can derail them, and develop tools to overcome them.

Today’s question: Which gets stronger with practice—the Monster of Distraction or intentionality? 🎯

Learning how to grow your own food is about so much more than growing food. 🌱🐟

Through their aquaponics quest, our learners are learning how fish, plants, water, and microorganisms can work together to create a sustainable food system—with very little waste. They’re getting their hands dirty, asking questions, solving real problems, and learning skills that can actually be used in the real world.

We want our learners to grow up knowing how to create, build, adapt, and become more self-sufficient—not just memorize information for a test.

This is learning by doing. And they are LOVING it.

Hands-on science is the best kind of science! 🐟🦐🌱

Our Sparks loved learning alongside Dr. Geoff, our marine biologist enrichment guide, as they helped transfer fish and shrimp into our new aquaponics system. Lots of little hands helping, lots of questions being asked, and a great discussion to wrap it all up.

Safe to say… they LOVED every minute of it. 💚

Who created God? 🤔

This past Friday, one of our Eagles stepped into the role of Socratic facilitator and challenged her fellow learners with one of humanity’s biggest questions:

Why does anything exist at all?

Does everything that begins to exist need a cause?
Could the universe have created itself?
If God created the universe… who created God?
And why is saying “God has always existed” different from saying “the universe has always existed?”

This is the beginning of our exploration of Christian apologetics—learning not simply what we believe, but wrestling with why we believe it.

And at Acton, the Guide doesn’t always stand at the front with the answers.

Sometimes an Eagle stands at the front… with really good questions. 🦅

Think deeply. Ask boldly. Seek truth.

Field trips hit a little different when you get to hatch a baby alligator in your own hands! 🐊🤯

Our Gatorama adventure was packed with hands-on learning, incredible animals, lots of exploring, plenty of play, and memories these learners won’t soon forget. This is what learning beyond the studio looks like—and we’re here for it! 🌿🐊

Apprentice Guide
Acton Academy Estero | Estero / Ft. Myers

Are you interested in education, but not convinced the traditional classroom is the only way to do it?

Acton Academy Estero is looking for an energetic, curious, and mission-driven Apprentice Guide to join our growing learner-driven school.

And this definitely isn't a typical school.

Our campus is located on a working farm, and much of our learners' day is spent outside. Eagles may move between their Studios, fields, gardens, animals, pond, outdoor gathering spaces, and hands-on projects throughout the day. We believe some of the best learning happens when young people are moving, exploring, building, creating, and interacting with the real world.

Acton Academy is a radically different approach to education. Instead of teachers lecturing at the front of a classroom, our Guides create an environment where young people learn to think independently, solve problems, set goals, work collaboratively, and take ownership of their education.

Our learners are called Eagles, classrooms are called Studios, and teachers are called Guides because we believe young people are capable of far more than simply following instructions.

What You'll Do

As an Apprentice Guide, you'll work alongside experienced Guides and gradually learn how to:

Facilitate Socratic discussions rather than lecture
Coach learners to solve their own problems instead of providing answers
Support individualized academic progress
Lead hands-on projects, challenges, and real-world learning experiences
Spend significant portions of the day outdoors learning and working alongside Eagles
Incorporate our farm, animals, gardens, pond, and natural environment into the learning experience
Help learners develop independence, responsibility, leadership, and strong character
Build and protect a positive, high-accountability Studio culture
Participate in agricultural, entrepreneurial, outdoor, and experiential learning
Learn the Acton Academy model with the opportunity to grow into a larger Guide role
Who We're Looking For

You do not need traditional classroom teaching experience.

In fact, this may be an especially good fit for someone studying Alternative Education, Education, Psychology, Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Outdoor Education, Environmental Studies, or a related field who is excited about rethinking how young people learn.

Our ideal candidate is:

Energetic and great with young people
Curious and willing to learn
Comfortable allowing learners to struggle productively rather than immediately rescuing them
Dependable, humble, and coachable
Creative and willing to try new things
Someone who genuinely enjoys being outdoors and doesn't want to spend the entire day inside a classroom
Comfortable getting a little dirty and participating in hands-on learning
Interested in learner-driven, nature-based, and experiential education
Excited about helping young people become capable, independent human beings

Acton Academy Estero is a Christian, faith-based learning community, so applicants should be comfortable working in an environment where Christian faith and values are an important part of our culture.

Why This Opportunity Is Different

This isn't an internship where you'll spend your time making copies or watching from the sidelines.

You'll be immersed in a working alternative-education environment on a farm, where the line between the classroom and the real world often disappears. You'll be mentored in a completely different approach to learning—one built around Socratic discussion, project-based learning, individual mastery, entrepreneurship, outdoor exploration, character development, and learner agency.

One morning might involve coaching Eagles through their individual academic goals; another part of the day could involve a Socratic discussion, caring for animals, exploring the pond, building something, working in the garden, or helping learners tackle a real-world challenge.

For the right person, this could become the beginning of a long-term career with Acton Academy Estero as we continue to grow.

Interested?

We'd love to meet you, show you our farm campus, introduce you to our Eagles, and let you experience an Acton Studio firsthand.
