It's the last week of school! I thought I'd send us all off into summer with Gershwin's timeless blend of classical music with sultry jazz, the famous Rhapsody in Blue.

The clarinet solo in the opening is fantastic. The clarinetist slides his fingers off of the open keys, one at a time, to create that unforgettable slide. In comes the trombone countermelody. We are so amazed at your hard work, and for this excellent accomplishment, so early in your efforts!!! (Of course, it helps that you come from a musical family, Lindsey Prince...!! 🎶)

And congratulations to 𝐀𝐋𝐋 of the students who competed this weekend—I heard some fantastic playing coming out of the studios last week!! You learned harder pieces than ever before, competed under pressure, and whether there was a prize awarded or not, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 means 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 personally, regardless. 🏆

You'll recognize the beautiful theme at the end of this one! But you may be surprised to learn that this piece is written to honor and celebrate the composer's homeland, Finland.

The Romantic period (during the 1800s) was a time when Westerners loved and celebrated their own nations — that's where the term "nationalism" comes from. You might listen to Finlandia, and appreciate Sibelius's love for his nation, and think of the 250th anniversary of our nation's birth, and your love for our great nation!
