What process or programs determine whether students receive accommodations during a state assessment?

TEA accessibility policies may apply to any student taking STAAR or TELPAS assessments depending on his or her needs and whether the student meets the eligibility criteria, if applicable.

Each accommodation has different eligibility criteria and the authority for decisions can fall in the hands of different groups, such as ARD committees, 504 committees, or RTI team, just to name a few. Not all accommodations provided during classroom instruction are appropriate for a standardized test, so these teams will need to be familiar with the allowed supports for a specific testing program when making these decisions.

If a student has been identified as needing an accommodation, possibly by a teacher or someone who works with that student on a daily basis, they should go to the TEA Accommodation Resources webpage and look up eligibility requirements as well as authority for decision and required documentation to help guide those decisions.
