GCRA interviewed Mallory Doan, CVR, CCR for 🙌 Mallory interned with GCRA’s Education Committee and is now one of Georgia’s newly certified court reporters 🎉🥳🎊

Q. What made you decide court reporting and/or captioning?
A. I think when I truly reflected on my happiest working experiences, I realized what aspects of a career I enjoyed and what I didn't. I was an English major and with my love of reading, writing (and yes, even editing papers!), I knew that I had to find that kind of satisfaction again in my career.
When I found out that people do this professionally and that there is no advanced degree required but just a willingness to learn and work hard, I set out to find a mentor. Luckily, I was introduced to an amazing mentor and a whole community of great people eager to talk about this profession.

Q. What method of takedown do you use?
A. I am a voice writer so I use Dragon and Eclipse. What this means is that I use a Dragon mask that I speak into quickly and quietly and it translates my words and verbal cues into my Eclipse software on my computer. Then words magically appear on my screen in real time. I then go back in and edit or “scope” for errors. A lot of this time scoping is researching medical and legal terminology and correcting spellings. Each day I learn something new and different.

Q. How long have you been providing court reporting/captioning services?
A. I passed my Certified Verbatim Reporter exam back in 2022 and I have been shadowing other reporters for a few months. I started working full time in December 2022. Now as I'm into my first few months of working full time, I am so glad that I took this leap of faith.

Q. What advice would you give someone who’s considering the court reporting/captioning career path?
A. Find a mentor! They can answer a lot of questions for you which will help you decide if this is the right career for you. Not to mention, getting involved and meeting people opens a lot of doors both professionally and personally.

Q. What do you love about your career?
A. I love so many things about this career. One of which is that I didn't have to accumulate student loan debt or spend years in school to learn this really in demand skill. And another thing, when you're in demand, you are truly no longer fighting through a long interview process for job after job – once you have that certification under your belt, you are hired. Suddenly, you can choose what works for your schedule.
If you want to work from home, you can. If you want to work in a courtroom, go for it! Want to work 3 days a week and be off the other two? How about not working weekends or holidays? This career allows you the flexibility and preferences that fit your needs and if you're interested in going the courthouse route, you get government benefits.
I think the most important thing I love about my career is that not only am I doing something that is interesting every day, but I am compensated well for how much work I choose to take on at any time.

Q. What made you decide on court reporting and/or captioning?
A. I was 12 years old and as my Mom would say, “we didn’t have a pot to p**s in”. She had a friend named Linda who had cool feathered hair and a Paula Abduel CD in her car (when no one had CD’s in the car), not to mention - a condo on the beach. She owned a Court Reporting firm in Sarasota, Florida. She HAPPILY owned a CR firm - that is what stuck with me! Linda took me under her wing and mentored me - even though she had no idea the impression she made to inspire me. Straight out of high school I knew exactly what I would be as I ran to college. I would own a CR firm one day!

Q. What method of takedown do you use?
A. I started my journey as a steno writer and after carpal tunnel came knocking on my door, I learned voice. Grateful to know both, happy I am a voice writer! I use AudioScribe and an open mic as a captioner/CART provider.

Q. How long have you been providing court reporting/captioning services?
A. Going on 20 years with a gap in there to care for my babies. I have done court, CART and captioning and now own a CART and Captioning company, for the past 9 years. My love for helping others is fulfilled with CCC, the school for voice writers that I have developed.

Q. What advice would you give someone who’s considering the court reporting/captioning career path?
A. It was the only choice for me and I feel SUPER blessed that I always knew. My favorite adjectives for this career are: flexible, rewarding, ever changing, financial security, stimulating, well respected.
Choose a school and software with a great support system. Welcome to freedom from any job you have ever had to dread!

Q. What do you love about your career?
A. I genuinely LOVE my career and feel very honored to provide services to those in need, all while making a great living and having the flexibility to live life how I choose. Career and passion genuinely collide here!
