Virginia's Most Trusted School for Students With Dyslexia in Grades K-8 Learning differences, like dyslexia, affect one in five U.S. children.
“A dyslexic child’s mind is like a safe, and when you find the right combination, it opens the doors. Riverside knows that combination and knows how to open those doors.”

Today was one of Riverside’s sweetest annual traditions – cookies from the Parents Association! Thank you to all our families for sprinkling our faculty and staff with these treats to help celebrate the holiday season.
On this Giving Tuesday, we are thankful for so many things at Riverside including our amazing students, their supportive families, and our dedicated friends. Your gift to the Annual Fund supports increased financial aid, upgraded classroom materials and technology, Orton-Gillingham teacher training, and so much more. Thank you for your support! https://riversideschool.org/donate-now/
Sharing our gratitude! Riverside is thankful for the grandparents, friends, and family members who attended our annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day last week. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day special and all our Riverside families.
The book fair is here! Riverside’s library is full of great choices at this year’s book fair. Students are previewing the fair and exploring titles today and tomorrow.
Two days will be available to parents and grandparents to shop the book fair. Parents are invited to join us at Family Shopping Day on November 17 from 3:20 pm to 5:30 pm. We’ll also have the book fair open to grandparents and guests during our Grandparents and Special Friends Day on November 22 between 8:30 am to Noon.
It was a special Morning Assembly yesterday as we welcomed guests from Bon Air and River City Rotary Clubs! Through the generosity of an $11,000 grant from these Rotary Clubs, Riverside was able to launch its digital collection of ebooks and audiobooks. We were able to add 74 digital audiobooks, 248 ebooks, and 109 print books to our collection through this grant. Our library collection went from 0% digital to 10% digital, which is a huge step for us to offer digital content to our students 24/7.
Ebooks and audiobooks offer features that are helpful to dyslexic readers. Ebooks have controls for font size, style, background color, audio speed, and voice, so students adapt the book to fit their individual needs. Audio books allow students to “read with their ears,” and science tells us that, “When they compared the semantic brain maps for listening and reading, the researchers found that they were almost identical.”
Thank you to the Bon Air and River City Rotary Clubs for this transformational gift of 431 new books!
Have you ordered your Riverside swag? The Riverside Swag Store offers a variety of items to show your Riverside pride, including apparel, car magnets, and more. Shop the online store and place your orders before midnight on Wednesday, November 9. https://www.greentruckmarketing.com/showrooms.htm

We are excited to introduce our newest math teacher and LF teacher, Gina Wojtysiak. Gina has 15 years of combined teaching and work experience.
Gina holds a degree in Studio Art from Indiana University where she also studied French and Business. In 2018, she completed Virginia’s Career Switcher Program for Teacher Licensure and earned teaching endorsements in Middle School Math and Visual Art. Earlier this year Gina studied the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching through Riverside’s O-G Associate level coursework.
While completing her Orton-Gillingham coursework, Gina began substitute teaching at Riverside School. She told us she "was so impressed with the school’s individualized approach to teaching and the culture of kindness cultivated here that I knew this was where I wanted to teach."
In addition to teaching Gina is a children’s book illustrator and member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, gardening and making art with her two daughters.
We are excited to announce that Riverside's Library has moved to an expanded space in the Atrium Building! Mrs. Cain can't wait to welcome students to the new, larger Library. Here's a sneak peek.
We are excited to introduce our new instructional assistant, Amy Lawson. Amy has been a substitute at Riverside School and her son attends our school. Amy stated, "Riverside School has been an incredibly positive experience for our family, and I am ecstatic to be part of the team." Amy attended the University of Richmond - Go Spiders!! She has been involved in the education field for 20 years and has worn many different hats from teacher to administrator to substitute. When she is not driving a carpool, helping with homework, or volunteering, she enjoys hiking, walking, reading, and spending time at the beach with her husband, three children, and her Portuguese Water Dog, Posey.
We are excited to introduce you to Sarah Bonkovsky, a new LF Teacher. Sarah has taught at First Baptist Preschool for the past six years. She has a degree from The College of New Jersey in Elementary Education with a concentration in English. She told us that she is excited to work at Riverside School because of the wonderful faculty and students. Sarah completed the Orton-Gillingham course this spring and she is looking forward to putting this approach into practice in the fall. In her spare time, she likes to hang out with her family, read, watch tv, and go for walks around Richmond.
We are so excited to welcome our new classroom teacher, Karen Hollowell, to Riverside School. Karen brings 22 years of classroom teaching experience to our school.
She has taught in public schools in North Carolina and Virginia and has a Bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Studies Teacher Preparation and a Master's in Reading. When asked why she was interested in working at Riverside School, Karen stated "I'm excited to teach at Riverside because I know it's an amazing school. I have wanted to learn more about how to teach students with dyslexia to read, so I'm excited about the training. I'm excited to teach students with the goal of actually learning the information as opposed to being prepared for the test." Karen's hobbies include loving to read and write. She is working on a novel and has written for some blogs, magazines, and one app. She loves spending time with her kids and two cats.

At Riverside School - Richmond, Art Club students have been learning about Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. He combined his love of balance and order with an intense passion for jazz, in particular boogie woogie.
This dynamic becomes very evident in his later work which is geometric but full of repetition and energy. The children understood the concept immediately and adopted the method right into their paintings.
At Riverside School - Richmond, learning is made fun through the use of objects that drive home concepts. Here, students created catapults to launch marshmallows and then graphed their results using a coordinate graph.
Riverside School - Richmond, Virginia's most trusted school for children with dyslexia and similar language-based learning differences, is currently hiring for a full-time classroom teacher.
