Brunswick Community College has made the decision to accelerate our Fire Academy schedule to complete all Firefighter I & II certification classes before the new standard takes effect on July 1, 2027.

Still need your Firefighter I & II certifications? There's still time to jump into the academy and work toward completing your certifications under the current standard!

Only missing a class or two? No problem! You don't have to enroll in the entire academy. Join us for the individual classes you need to finish your certifications.

Whether you're just getting started or trying to knock out those last few classes, now is the time to get it done!

BCC will host the first of three 2026 Instructor Upgrade opportunities this Friday at 9:00 a.m. at the Alan Holden Public Safety Center, Room P207.

🚗 TR PASSENGER VEHICLE OPERATIONS | OCTOBER 17–18
Just a reminder that TR Passenger Vehicle Operations starts this Saturday at Southport Fire Department.
You have two more days to register online! After that, registration must be completed in person.

🚒 DRIVER/OPERATOR INTRO TO PUMPS | OCTOBER 21–23
The next course in the Southend Driver/Operator Series begins October 21 at Sunset Beach Fire Department. This course covers fire pump operations, apparatus safety, positioning, and basic pumping procedures.

🚒 FIRST DUE OPERATOR | OCTOBER 23–24
Knowing how to operate the pump is one thing. Knowing how to put that apparatus to work when you're first due is another. First Due Operator bridges the gap between Driver/Operator training and real-world fireground operations, focusing on apparatus placement, hydraulic calculations, and the decisions that matter when you're the first engine on scene.

Just a reminder that the WLF 3000 Red Card Training Block kicks off tonight, October 8, at Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department. You can register in person tonight.

The series includes classroom instruction and hands-on training covering wildland fire behavior, suppression techniques, firefighter safety, and more.

Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Durham Fire Department firefighter who tragically lost their life during an overnight fire. We also wish the two injured firefighters a full and speedy recovery.

Brunswick Community College extends our deepest condolences to Durham Fire Department and everyone affected by this tragedy.

FEMA SID REQUIRED FOR OSFM 24 BEGINNING OCTOBER 1, 2026

Beginning October 1, 2026, all Fire & Rescue personnel using OSFM 24 will be required to have a valid 10-digit FEMA Student Identification (SID) number associated with their account.

What should you do now?
Locate your FEMA SID and have it ready for October 1. Please do not update your FEMA SID in OSFM 24 before October 1. Because OSFM 24 is not currently configured to accept leading zeros in the FEMA SID field, most users should expect to enter their FEMA SID beginning October 1, even if they have previously provided a FEMA SID to OSFM.

If you already have a FEMA SID but don't remember it, do not create a new one. Retrieve your existing SID from FEMA. If you have never been issued a FEMA SID, you can register for one through FEMA.

Remember, your FEMA SID must be 10 digits. If you have an older SID with fewer than 10 digits, add zeros to the beginning.

Example: 1234567 becomes 0001234567

FEMA SIDs are issued and managed by FEMA. OSFM staff cannot create or look up FEMA SIDs.

Last night, our BCC Fire Academy recruits currently completing General & Communications had the opportunity to tour the Brunswick County 911 Communications Center (CCOM).

We appreciate the time the telecommunicators took to show our recruits how emergency calls are received and subsequently dispatched, answer their questions, and give them a better understanding of what takes place on the other side of the radio.

The recruits also had the opportunity to meet some of the telecommunicators they will be communicating with once they begin riding the trucks.

A huge thank you to the men and women at CCOM for the work they do behind the scenes every day to help keep our public safety agencies and the citizens they serve safe.
