In January of 1985 Margie Lovelace started the Hardeman County Literacy Council. She wanted to help people learn to read their Bibles. The motto was "Each One Teach One." Not only did volunteer tutors teach reading, but they taught spelling, math, life skills, how to dress and conduct yourself in a job interview, and numerous other needs. Adults received help in whatever area they needed, and they received confidentiality. For 36 years we have served the citizens of Hardeman County. When Margie retired, a small group of us were left and we promised to continue as long as we could. We did. We pressed on with no funding except what we could raise, decreasing volunteer staff, decreasing students, and decreasing board members over the past few years. This past year and half, Covid kept most people away, and we had few tutors or students. With the decrease of tutors and students, the original Charter turns our buildings over to the City of Bolivar on which their land our buildings are located. It is with great regret that we announce, as of the end of September, we will be forced to close the doors of "The Hardeman County Literacy Council." We wish to thank everyone who has supported or helped us in any way, whatsoever, over the past 36 years. May God richly bless each and every one of you for your kindness and generosity!
