We opened up the sound studio this semester! So inspired to see how Boise State Student Life has embraced it for their ongoing podcasts 🎤

Meet Veronica Yellowhair, a Native American from the Dine' (Navajo) tribe, majoring in writing, rhetoric and technical communication at Boise State University.

In her recent interview for the new ‘Get a (Student) Life’ podcast, Veronica shared a powerful story passed down by a Spiritual Advisor, “Go to it if it's good" — encouraging the active pursuits of the positive aspects of life, even when it demands effort.

As a result, Veronica attends Powwows throughout North America as “good medicine” — a kind of self care and connection to her spiritual and ancestral roots. Powwows are high energy events that span several days, featuring Indigenous song, dance, storytelling, demonstrations, food, craft and more. Through her personal experiences as a Women’s Fancy Shawl dancer, and her research at Powwows, Veronica is able to impart wisdom and leadership in her role as director of the Seven Arrows Powwow held on campus each spring.

Listen to this episode of the ‘Get a (Student) Life’ podcast, recorded in the Sound Studio at Albertsons Library, and save the date for the 31st Seven Arrows Powwow, set for March 30 and 31, 2024.

Can you guess this song from the Sleepwalker (1977, The Kinks) album?

🎵“There's a lady plays her fav'right records
On the jukebox ev'ry day.
All day long she plays the same old songs,
And she believes the things that they say.” 🎶

Comment the answer!

Bri, one of our library student employees, picked out this record because the cover spoke to her. Typically, she listens to pop and alternative rock, so The Kinks definitely fit her vibe.

The exhibit opens Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 9 a.m. Please join us for a reception on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. Opening remarks from Dr. Tromp, Sen. Chuck Winder, Shane Sato and more. Light refreshments will be served.

Throughout World War II, service members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), alongside the 100th Battalion and the Military Intelligence Service, faced the harsh realities of segregation, discrimination, and government-mandated incarceration. The RCT was composed of American-born Japanese “Nisei” (NEE-say), meaning second generation.

In spite of the injustices they were served, these brave troops embraced the ethos of "Go For Broke," the regiment's motto. Their unwavering determination led the RCT to become the most decorated regiment in the history of the U.S. military, owing to their pivotal role in rescuing a Texas National Guard unit trapped by N**i forces in 1944.

Join Albertsons Library for the 'Going For Broke Spirit: Portraits of Legacy by Shane Sato' exhibition, a series of photography featuring several of these heroic WWII veterans, from Wednesday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. The public is invited to an artist reception with Shane Sato and Boise dignitaries at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2 at the library.
