This week, Grade 1 students are writing opinion pieces and learning how to organize ideas into a paragraph. Yesterday, students drew their favorite part of Riverstone like Library with Ms. McCormick (photo 2) and P.E. with Mr. Ashley (photo 3). They will now create paragraphs by stating their opinion in a topic sentence, giving reasons to support their opinion, and finishing with a wrap-up sentence. We can’t wait to see their finished work! 📝

“During our Systems of Government Unit of Inquiry in Grade 4, students have learned about how people organize and structure themselves. We had the pleasure of speaking with Governor Otter, the 32nd State Governor who served from 2007-2019. Governor Otter spoke with students about Idaho’s history and what makes Idaho unique. He answered students questions and wonderings with detail and anecdotes. We appreciate his time and we are so grateful the students got this opportunity!” -Samantha Barnes & Sierra Wilson, Grade 4 Teachers

“On Friday, Grade 3 students shared their final projects for the magnetism and electricity unit. Each student was challenged to build an experiment of their choice that tested either magnetism or electricity concepts learned throughout the unit. It was so fun to see their creativity and enthusiasm as they shared with one another.” -Eden Gray, Grade 3 Teacher

Last week, MYP Chemistry designed and conducted experiments to determine the relative viscosities of four different petroleum products. This lab is an introduction to the unit on covalent bonding and reactions where they will investigate the physical and chemical properties of petroleum products and other nonmetal compounds. 🧪

This week, Kindergarten students began their third unit of inquiry on “Where We Are in Time and Place,” exploring concepts of home. Students will inquire into the purpose of a home, how home designs reflect culture, and how environments influence home construction.

For their first building challenge, students brainstormed ideas for building snow shelters and required tools. They then collaborated to construct imaginative snow shelters outside.

This semester, Grade 5 has decided to start a tradition of “birthday giving!” On each birthday, in addition to choosing a fun birthday activity for the class to participate in, the birthday child will also have the opportunity to make a birthday wish and a financial contribution, however big or small, to the Grade 5 class donation fund. Toward the end of the year, Grade 5 will consider the money collected and decide as a class which local charities and organizations to donate it to.

“We hope to instill in our children the importance of thinking of others and giving to good causes, whether financially or through time and efforts, when we are able.” -Grade 5 Teaching Team

This year Student Council looks a lot different since it is a High School elective class. We have been working behind the scenes on many projects. Each month High School Student Council focuses on an IB Learner Profile, last month was Open-Minded. Each student in class wrote a children’s story aimed for Grade 1 students about being Open-Minded. This week, we had the opportunity to go visit the Grade 1 classes and read our stories to them. I don’t know who had more fun, the high schoolers or the Grade 1 students! It was a blast! -Brandi McCarney, MYP Humanities and High School Student Council Teacher

In Elementary School, the Green Team has been offering hands-on experiential activities for the children to do on every other Tuesday during lunch recess time. This week the Green Team offered tree cookies or tree rounds to decorate. Children were given the opportunity to decorate them any way they wanted and could take them home or hang them up around campus. Most children decided to take them home, and some wanted to give them as gifts. The tree cookies can be hung either outside or inside, on a tree, in a window, on a wall, or any place you would like. 🌳

Yesterday, under the enchanting guidance of our magical holiday sorting hat, the Grade 6 students were sorted into their advisories! Our advisory program builds school culture through fun and friendly competition, and middle school students can expect to join their advisories for homeroom in Grade 7. After the sorting ceremony, students participated in a gingerbread house competition and games in the gym. Thank you to our Student Life Coordinator, Eleri, for today’s holiday festivities, and congratulations to Lower Kootenai on their winning gingerbread house! -Christian Bondy, MYP Coordinator and MYP English Teacher

Grade 1 had their last iCode class yesterday. Students learned how to code an iguana walking over different color dots and changing colors to match the dot. They used this skill to work on if, then statements: “If you touch red, then turn costume red. If you touch blue, then turn costume blue.”

Great job, Grade 1! 🧑‍💻

Yesterday in Ms. Bradshaw’s class, Odie M.’s mom visited and taught the class about Hannukah and the traditions it holds. After learning about Hannukah, they played the Dreidel game. This morning, Odie led her class in lighting the menorah signaling the second day of Hanukkah. 🕎

“Yesterday was the first day of winter outdoor education programming for Riverstone. Our Grade 4 class participated in their first of four SnowSchool programs. We discussed snow depth and temperature and animal adaptations. We also hypothesized why it wasn’t snowing as much as it did last year at this time. Students did a great job snowshoeing around the Bogus Nordic Lodge. We have been participating in SnowSchool for over 10 years. SnowSchool is a national program founded at Bogus Basin and coordinated by the Winter Wildlands Alliance.” -Derek Weight, Outdoor Education & Service Learning Coordinator 🎿 ❄️

“Yesterday in Grade 8 Design we practiced making detailed instructions in a festive way! We wrote instructions on how to create Gingerbread Houses, then tested out eachother’s instruction-writing skills. The results were so much fun! We learned that when writing instructions, you have to be as detailed as possible. We will take what we learned from this practice to help us create detailed plans for our Toy Design unit!” -Sydney Bergen, MYP Design Teacher
