“Girl, please go focus on yourself.”

Not because she wasn’t ambitious.
She was.

Not because she didn’t have big dreams.
She absolutely did.

But she kept pushing through things that deserved her attention.

She sat too long so she could finish the project.

She ignored the signs that she needed more rest.

She kept putting what her body needed behind what everyone else needed.

She thought slowing down meant she might fall behind.

Now?

I know there is nothing more powerful than a woman who knows her worth, protects her health, works toward her goals, and still dreams big.

I didn’t stop dreaming after my stroke.

If anything, I dream bigger now.

But I no longer believe I have to sacrifice myself to make those dreams happen.

And I think that might be the biggest difference between last August me and this August me.

One was trying to push through life.

The other is learning how to actually live it.

“Just stop thinking about it.”

If it were that easy, I would.

Sometimes, my mind starts looking for warning sign, wondering if something could be wrong.

For me, it usually happens with my health.

But for someone else, it might be something completely different.

💬 A conversation you keep replaying.

👶 Something your child said.

💸 A bill you weren’t expecting.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞.

Your mind starts looking for evidence that something is wrong.

And once it starts, it can be hard to stop.

I’ve had people tell me, “Just stop thinking about it.”

I know they mean well.

But that advice always makes me feel like they just don’t understand.

If I could simply stop the thoughts, I would.

The problem is, I’m not sitting there choosing to think about something that scares me.

The thoughts are automatic.

📖 Yesterday, I found myself doing exactly that.

Usually, a session helps me when I get stuck in that high-alert state, but Abbie is out of town this weekend, so I decided to find another way to work with what was happening.

That’s when I remembered Day 3 from our 10-Day Energy Cleanse book. It’s about ANTs, Automatic Negative Thoughts.

👉 One of the things we do in the book is take the negative thought and consciously replace it with a different one.

That’s when I remember, I didn’t need to stop the thought, I needed to change the conversation by REPLACING it.

Last night, when I woke up and felt my mind scanning my body for danger, I didn’t try to argue with myself or force the thoughts away.

And slowly, I felt my nervous system begin to calm down.

Do you believe there are angels among us?

I used to listen to the song 🎶 Angels Among Us by Alabama, and it always made me wonder...

What if the people who seem to show up at exactly the right moment are an angel?

The ones who do something differently.

The ones who change the direction of your story without even realizing it.

A few months ago, I believe I met one of those people.

Her name is Dr. Uranga.

She walked into my hospital room when I was scared, overwhelmed, and unsure who or what to believe. I had already seen 4 other doctor/surgeons and some of them had labeled me with issues I didn’t even have.

But she was different.

She didn’t speculate.

She didn’t feed me fearful stories.

She didn’t push me toward surgery.

Instead, she gave me something I desperately needed in that moment:

Time and Hope.

Dr Uranga told me she believes people know their own bodies and should be part of the decisions about their care.

And she believes surgery should be a last resort.

So she gave me the option to go home, wait, see how my body responded, and make a decision later after we did a few follow up appointments.

I did exactly that.

And three months later, I went back to see her and received good news. I didn’t need surgery. My issue was resolved.

I don’t know if angels really walk among us.

But I do know that sometimes, a person walks into your life at exactly the right moment and changes the direction of your story.

Maybe angels aren’t always people who perform miracles.

Maybe sometimes they’re simply people who listen.

People who don’t rush you.

People who give you hope when you’re scared.

People who trust you to know your own body.

Dr. Uranga may have simply been doing her job.

But she was an angel in my story.

And I don’t think she’ll ever know just how much that meant to me.

It’s experiences like this that remind me how much we can learn when we listen, to our bodies, to other people, and to the people who have walked through something before us.

That’s why we created The Listening Project, a place to share the things we’ve learned along the way, what we wish we’d known sooner, the questions we wish we’d asked, and the wisdom we’ve gained from our experiences.

And maybe listening to other people’s stories will be an angel moment in our lives.

This is Conversation 01: Angels Among Us

For those who didn’t see my Stories and want to know what happened that landed me in that hospital bed, I’ll share the backstory in the comments.

Some of the most valuable information I learned after my stroke came from other people’s stories.

It gave me another question to ask, another possibility to consider, or simply the reassurance that I wasn’t the only one who has experienced it.

If you’ve learned something through your own health experience that you wish you had known sooner, I’d love to hear it.

After my stroke, one of my doctors strongly recommended cholesterol medication even though my cholesterol wasn’t high.

The reason was to reduce my risk of having another stroke.

So I asked: “What is my actual risk of having another stroke?”

That question changed the conversation for me. I found out my risk was less than 3%.

More recently, during a hospital stay, I was told I had sepsis and was treated for it.

I was terrified.

It took five days of testing before I found out I didn’t actually have sepsis.

Over four days, I saw five different doctors, and each one had a different idea about what caused the problem and what surgery might help. A different surgery was suggested each day.

And I remember thinking: Who am I supposed to trust?

Thankfully, my husband was there with me to ask more questions. Questions I wouldn’t have thought to ask.

I know doctors have a difficult job. They’re working with the information they have, and sometimes they genuinely don’t know the answer yet.

But when you’re the patient, you deserve to understand what is known, what is suspected, and what is still uncertain.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do when we’re scared isn’t immediately make a decision.

It’s pause.

Ask questions.

And make sure we understand what we’re being told.

And this is part of why we care so much about creating space for our clients to slow down, ask questions, and notice what their body is telling them.

Because we believe you should be seen, heard, and included as one of the experts on your own experience.

So whether you’ve been medically traumatized or not, know that you have the right to ask questions when it comes to your care.

We’ve included some suggested questions that might be helpful in the comments. ↓

Strength looks different than we were taught it does.

For a lot of us, strength meant pushing through.
Not complaining. Getting it done no matter what it cost.

So when your body finally asks you to stop, it can feel like giving up. Like you’re failing at the one thing you’ve always been good at.

But there’s another kind of strength in that stopping.

The kind that says I’ve carried enough for now. The kind that trusts rest isn’t a detour from who you are, it’s part of how you get back to her.

If this one hits close, just know that you don’t have to earn rest.

Some version of you had to end for this one to begin.

There’s a stretch where you don’t quite recognize yourself yet. Not who you were, not who you’re becoming. Just in between. That part is uncomfortable, and it’s also exactly where the change is happening.

The spark doesn’t show up fully formed. It comes back slowly, in the moments you almost forgot you were capable of feeling.

If you’re in the middle of losing a version of yourself right now, that’s not the end of the story. It’s the part right before the good

Here’s the honest behind the scenes version.

Most people don’t expect to fall asleep. Most people do anyway. Others would rather chat and that’s okay too.

Either way, I provide a calming experience by doing these things:

I dim the lights, offer you an eye mask, a blanket, and put on something relaxing in the background. Little things, but they matter. Your body picks up on all of it.

Then the real work happens. We use low frequencies that help your brain settle into delta and theta, the states tied to deep healing and rest, the same place your brain needs to reach for real recovery, not just closed eyes.

At the end of the session, I offer you a foot zone, a mini foot massage that works with the bodies reflex points. It’s totally optional, but it’s a great way to finish a session.

After a session, we usually hear that people go home and take a nap, or sleep great that night. In the days after, they have more energy and feel calmer and more relaxed.

Send this to a friend who needs a great nights sleep.

Comment 😴 and we’ll send you a 40% off code for your first session.
