Fatherhood, by Pastor Gordon,

One of the most arresting verses in the Bible is Luke 3:38. It comes at the conclusion of one of the two lineage records for Jesus found in the gospels (scholars suggest one traced Mary’s line, and one traced Joseph’s line). It reads, “the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.” Did you catch that? There have been 16 verses listing men – human beings – in the “upline” of Jesus, and then there is a quantum leap from the line of men – Adam - to God Himself! “... Adam, the son of God.” That should catch our attention!

We know that it doesn’t mean that God had “relations” with some earthly or celestial woman. No, the Bible very clearly tells us that God created man in His likeness, yes, but He did so by forming him from the dust of the ground, and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and Adam became a living being. No pre-incarnate s*x scene there!

But what Luke 3:38 literally shouts to us is that when God created Adam, He infused the very concept and reality of fatherhood into His relationship with Adam, and into the human race. God is the original and ultimate source of “fatherhood.” God Himself is indeed “our Father who art in heaven.”

On the human level, we understand that knowing our earthly father and having a healthy relationship with him is very important in helping us understand our identity, giving us a good role model, correcting us, encouraging us, protecting and providing for us. Trust issues, confidence issues, integrity issues and so much more are hugely influenced by the man we call Dad. I believe that the spiritual reason for this is that each of us ultimately needs to look to God, our heavenly Father, for these very things.

Dads, we need God’s forgiveness when we fall short (and we all do!) But we also need His strength to be the men God created us – and calls us – to be. And that’s the word – strength! A man of God is a man who is strong because he’s learned that the Almighty God is the Source of his strength. And he’s learned that one of the most important things he can pass on to his sons and daughters is how to walk in, live in, act in, and rest in … the strength of the Lord, which becomes our strength.

On the giving end, fathers, step into your calling! Through your relationship with your children, show them the love, trustworthiness, patience, and encouragement we all need from our Heavenly Father. On the receiving end, if you have or had a great relationship with a great dad, thank God for that! And if your relationship with dad wasn’t so great, or didn’t exist at all, earnestly look to God to heal your soul, fill the gaps, and reveal in an even deeper way who He is as your Father who loves you! Because, love us He does!

Happy Father’s Day! … Pastor Gordon
