RYAN! Elizabeth Feddersen specializes in creating compelling site-specific installations and public artworks which invite people to consider our relationships to history, culture, the land, and our non-human-kin. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Cornish College of the Arts in 2009, and is now based in Tacoma, Washington. Feddersen grew up in Wenatchee and is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, from the Okanogan and Arrow Lakes bands, and of mixed European descent. Her practice focuses on creative problem solving to address social issues through visual allegories that provide opportunities for exploration, introspection, epiphany. She investigates creative strategies to activate engagement through interactive materials, community sourced content, social practice, fun and humor. These approaches enable her work to start conversations about a broad spectrum of subjects and promote collective learning. Feddersen has created large-scale site-specific pieces and interactive installations throughout North America and has a growing body of permanent artworks in the public realm. http://ryanfeddersen.com/

Emily Somoskey All Encompassing
Wednesday, January 17 – Friday, March 22, 2024
Gallery hours: Tuesday-Friday 10 am-5 pm
Blue Galleries at Center for the Visual Arts, 1110 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID

The Blue Galleries presents “All Encompassing” by artist Emily Somoskey. The works in the exhibition utilize paint and collaged photographic imagery as a means to think through the larger questions, curiosities, and areas of subjectivity that make up our world.

Somoskey’s work depicts the universe as a flexible space that is ever-expanding, collapsing, and colliding, along with our understanding of it. She brings familiar subjects such as swimming pools, bird nests and lawn chairs in conversation with overarching mechanisms that make up our world, such as galaxies, orbital pathways and physics diagrams.

These elements coalesce on the surface of the canvas in a way that straddles representation and abstraction, prompting the viewer to reconsider our relationship to the known world and opening up new ways of seeing and understanding our place within it. At its core, the artist is connecting with the world beyond herself and visualizing what it means to be a human in our current and increasingly complex world.

Admission is free and open to the public.

About the artist: Emily Somoskey is a 2-D mixed media artist originally from Akron, OH. Through large and small-scale works on canvas, she uses paint and collaged imagery as a means to think through the larger questions, curiosities and areas of subjectivity that make up our world. In combining these mediums, Emily weaves together moments of clarity and ambiguity that articulates, disrupts and complicates a singular understanding of the work. She is an Assistant Professor of Art at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA and has her BA in Education/Painting from The University of Akron and her MFA from Michigan State University. Somoskey also holds a certification in college teaching from Michigan State University.
