At Acton we lean on great ideas like flow. In his TED talk, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi notes the intersection of challenge and skill as the place to find flow.

I was inspired by these definitions at Acton Rocklin.

At Acton, we don’t force, coerce, or even nudge learners to choose learning. Rather, we inspire, equip, and connect learners in tightly bound tribes with high standards of excellence.

One thing that has always surprised me is despite all my efforts, the most influential person to inspire reading seems to be another learner, just a bit older, who loves to read. In that way, a 7 year old learner has for more influence than I’ve ever had on reading in our studios.

The real learning at Acton Academy.

I had the privilege of listening to this girl pitch to Launchpad (high school) this morning.

She started at Heroes Academy in elementary, pitched and finished middle school, and now her peers have invited her to be the newest member of Launchpad. I’ve always admired her natural leadership and work ethic.

The Acton model relies on young people who take ownership and responsibility for their learning - both by design but also because we fail, and learn, and grow as an organization too. This girl is evidence of the remarkable things young people can do if given the chance. It was a privilege to see her take this step today, and more importantly to see that she had developed the habits and character to be ready for it.

What I admire most about Jeff and Laura is that despite being able to write big checks, they decided to spend their time in the trenches, serving learners and families. They were examples of true servant leadership.

Since this transition has begun, I’ve very cautiously chosen my words. I wanted to be clear that I do not see my role as filling their shoes. Those shoes are too big to fill. Rather my role is to stand alongside each of and every Acton Academy learner, parent, owner and guide, to fill those worn down, battered shoes that Jeff and Laura wore for so long.

These slippers, given to each Acton Academy owner this weekend at our annual owners conference, is an invitation to the them and the world to carry forward the belief that started Acton years ago: That every child is a genius who deserves to find a calling that will change the world.
