"Pavana alla Venetiana" is an Italian tune from the early 1500's written by lute-player Joan Ambrosia Dalza and arranged by Kim Robertson. It blows my mind every time we get to play music that's centuries old; talk about a long-lasting legacy!
And right along that theme is the wonderful Historic Carousel in Albany, OR, that we visited a little while ago. It features a restored antique carousel mechanism bearing all kinds of animals, each one dreamed up and designed by individual sponsors and hand-carved from wood by volunteers -- many of whom were taught how to woodwork by the carousel's team.
The carousel currently offers free tours into the woodworking shop to see the current animals in progress and view some antique carousel animals from as far back as 1890. Give it a visit if you're ever in the area!

Lively, passionate Celtic music served up hot with fiddle, harp, and a whole lot of fun!

In honor of Memorial Day, I spent a rainy-sunny afternoon at our veteran's cemetery and played for my family and those who have gone before us in service. I love that you can hear the nearby red-winged blackbirds singing a few times in this video! Blackbird truly has spoken!
Wikipedia writes, "Morning Has Broken" was written by Eleanor Farjeon and published in 1931, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune, "Bunessan." (long before Cat Stevens made it popular. π ) Si Bheag Si Mhor was written by Turlough O'Carolan.
In grateful remembrance of our servicemen and servicewomen.

I've been so excited to share this tune and video! "The Waves of Ballycurrane." This is an original jig I wrote around 2018 for fiddle that I only recently harp-ified, and when Steven and I visited the beautiful Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Oregon last year I had a nagging desire to bring my harp with me the next year - so here we are! I hope you enjoy tulip shots, because I took a lot of them. It had drizzled much of the night and morning before we got there and I was a little worried I'd be playing in the rain, but it cleared up just in time for a lovely rainbow and rain-sparkling flowers!
Special thanks to Wooden Shoe Farm for the gorgeous flower festival, and to Steven for being my cameraman while I was playing - he says he has very good gimbal arms. (Lol!)
Took some time to play a handful of tunes in the corner of the cute historic inn where Steven and I were staying the night and decided to sneak in a little live recording while I was at it. This is "She Moved Through the Fair," featuring my furtive glance to make sure I'm not annoying anyone as they come and go. π

Have we been out in the "wild" again? π€« I've been dreaming of bringing my harp to this place ever since we visited last year. A new harp video is in the works!
A beautiful tune that I never get tired of playing: The Parting Glass, featuring nature sounds of the wind and river and one excellent fishy splash. Filmed sometime last year before I knew anything about decent filming or extra footage -- so please enjoy some photos and random clips from our adventures that month. Photos/footage include more of the Magic Valley and a trip to Boulder Lake that we hiked a week or so later.
My St. Patrick's Day harp contribution: The Castle of Dromore. This was such a fun song to record because of all the beauty around this area! I've left the waterfall/river sounds in so it can be like one of those old Nature Quest CDs (does anyone else remember "Celtic Quest"??)
There were SO MANY animals around here, including two very busy rock chucks that were sprucing up their burrow with new grass and some super cool goats about fifteen minutes from the river that really tickled my fancy.
What an absolute party! Thank you, everyone, who came to our St. Pat's shows! We had a blast and saw so many friends and dear ones; it wouldn't have been as amazing without each one of you.
Big, big thank you to Amber Finnegan for taking and sharing this video with us! You are a rockstar!

First show is tonight at Powderhaus, 6-9pm (dancers are going to come do an intermission show at 7), then tomorrow we'll be at Hannah's from 6:30-8:30! See you there!
My friends Beyond the Burren and I will be opening our St. Pat's gigs next weekend with this raucous set of polkas - the Ballydesmond Set! It's gonna be a real hoot.
I got to visit the wild bald eagles and play harp around some of the gorgeous canyons and waterfalls in the Magic Valley area recently, and it is truly magical. This is "Lord Massareene," an O'Carolan composition I learned from Grainne Hambly.
Sorry for my death squint... I'm not really mad while I'm playing, the lighting and views were just best when I pointed myself toward the sun. (Lol!)
Two fun reels in the keys of D and A; these never fail to get the toes a-tappin'. Big thanks to my friend, Ella, for helping me on this set!

Fun fact: if the wind hits your harp strings at just the right angle you get wind chimes for free. I never get tired of this sound! (Though it can be a little startling when you're midway through a tune and the harp starts singing a different song on its own! π)
"Kusnacht" - a gorgeous waltz I learned from the incomparable Grainne Hambly. It seemed just the right pick for a bright, snowy day with my two girls. I also wanted to make sure they'd stick around for the whole song, so a little bit of bribery for both of them also seemed alright for the circumstance. π Happy 250 subs, everyone!
"Baloo Lammy" - A Scottish lullaby. Filmed on a quiet December night, this tune has always struck me as so beautifully peaceful. It was a fun challenge to see if I could keep track of my strings in low light!
In other news, Steven tells me that 250 youtube subscribers is the next milestone, and we're almost there! I really am quite floored that anyone other than my hubs and mother are listening to my music, so thank you, truly. I have a really fun video that I'm editing now for our 250-subscriber celebration -- can't wait to share it with everyone!
"Ookpik Waltz" in G major, styled after the Blake Whitmire Trio's rendition, featuring my talented friend who's been learning fiddle with me for a few years now!
Wikipedia says "the Ookpik Waltz was published in 1965 by the late, Mission, British Columbia, fiddler Frankie Rodgers." My friend looked up what an ookpik is, and apparently it's a small toy owl that the Inuit people make, often out of fur. The more you know! :)
Max was very concerned for my well-being as I attempted to harp outside in the snow. He wouldn't stop meowing at me unless I put him in my lap - which doesn't make for very clean harp playing, but does make for a cute video. π₯²
Happy 2024, everyone! And in a double-rainbow moment, my youtube channel also just passed 100 subscribers - which probably isn't much for them big youtubers out there, but when I picture 100 people in a room it sure feels like a lot of people to me. π₯³ So in celebration, here's an original I wrote back in 2019 called "Luthien." Enjoy, and Happy New Year!
