Today we honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a story from @pmtsprovo director Rhiannon Wright of Tongan and Samoan heritage. ❤️

“In many of the Pacific Islands, hair is believed to hold sacred power of ‘mana’ or spiritual energy. Specifically, in Tongan and Samoan culture, hair is ‘tapu’ or sacred... This photo is of my grandmother in traditional costume wearing a 'tuiga,' a traditional headpiece that embodies the mana of our ancestors.”

We love you Rhi! Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of your culture with us!

Good for your hair. Good for the planet. 🌏❤️

Our commitment to sustainability means we’re serious about taking care of our planet. Since our company's founding in 1980, we've been cruelty-free and implemented green ideas like establishing a solar-powered farm in Hawaii to grow awapuhi for our products. From decreasing our use of virgin plastic to making more of our products vegan, we continue to find ways to make our operations cleaner and greener. This month, we’re giving love back to the earth by highlighting our eco-friendly brands, so you can care for your hair while caring for the environment.

Feel good about what you put on your hair with clean formulas that address different hair types.

Special alumni feature with @kat_the_nail_tech! ✨

“My name is Kat Nordberg and I attended Paul Mitchell The School Boise in the fall of 2019 through Spring of 2020. Becoming an artist entrepreneur and running my own business was my dream and PMTS Boise helped to make that possible. From the first moment I walked through the doors, I knew this school was the perfect avenue to reach my goals and make my dream a reality! My Instructor, Jen Harding, was fantastic and I loved learning something new from her every day! The education I received throughout my time at PMTS, the loads of hands-on experience with members of our community, and the support of the instructors and staff truly set me up for success in this industry. I am honored to be a PMTS Boise Alumni and am so grateful to have the knowledge and backing of such a fantastic education and foundation to my career! Thank you, PMTS Boise!”

This month we feature the inspiring story of Future Professional Mykah Johnson.

Mykah began to experience horrible skin conditions from an early age. Her skin constantly experienced a range of minor acne to major cysts, and keloid scars began to cover her face. By the time she attended high school she started to feel extremely insecure, so she went to a dermatologist who misdiagnosed her condition and put her on Accutane, which dramatically worsened her condition. Mykah told us that she kept her head down in public, and was bullied heavily by others at her school.

After battling with her condition for years, she was finally able to receive a proper diagnoses, called Hidradenitis Suppurativa, and began finding better treatments for her skin and face. So many changes came Mykah's way after this breakthrough. During her interview with us, she recounts how while growing up, her mother always used Paul Mitchell products. After moving for her senior year of high school, Mykah discovered that there was a Paul Mitchell School in her city and she was thrilled! After high school, she enrolled at Paul Mitchell, and fell in love with making people feel beautiful. She explained that it has helped her own confidence grow immensely, and she knew right away that Paul Mitchell was the right choice for her.

In the words of Winn Claybaugh, “Our Paul Mitchell Schools have always had a philosophy of “one size fits all” – meaning we all share the responsibility of helping everyone feel loved and safe. Our culture has always been about bringing out the best in everyone, changing lives, making a difference, healing the planet, and healing ourselves.”

“4-year degrees are not the only way to become successful.”

We were so fortunate to interview Christina Thomas, Operations expert at Great Clips, about the power of the beauty industry.

She says, “This is not a career to be discounted. Many people can do very well in this industry... I’ve been able to do T.V., sporting events, managing and motivating people... it’s an endless career.”

You may not have known this, but @pmtsboise is locally owned! Our Dean, Lou Starita, is based in Boise, ID and we have 4 other sister schools in the region at:
@pmtsnampa
@pmtstwinfalls
@pmtsprovo
@pmtsrichland

We enjoy many benefits within our network of locally owned schools! We get to share the experience and knowledge of many educators who travel between campuses, Future Professionals get to participate in regional styling competitions, and (when there isn’t a pandemic) we even host a yearly New York trip where Future Professionals get to travel and expand their knowledge with world-renowned educators!

We love our sister schools and we are so fortunate to have a Dean who invests in the success of the Future Professionals at each of our locations!

Did you know...
In the US, the law in most states does not currently afford protection for race-based hair discrimination, even if the hairstyle is inherent to racial identity?

That means Black individuals can be denied opportunities for employment or professional advancement without consequence. It means Black children can be denied entry to school or educational opportunities because of their natural hair. This is NOT OK.

In 2019, anti-hair discrimination legislation called The CROWN Act was created. The CROWN Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, is a law that prohibits discrimination based on hair texture and hairstyle. Click the link to sign the anti-discrimination petition:
https://www.dove.com/us/en/stories/campaigns/the-crown-act.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAj9iBBhCJARIsAE9qRtB2KRHOw7Q0CytM479ppXyT5iG8BrgO-pVd5_VOQmSk7ikT7apHcuAaArPNEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

This week, we worked with Evie Larsen, a member of our Advanced Education Team, to capture and share what she recently learned at the PMAE & JPMS Natural Hair Training. At Paul Mitchell Schools, we train our staff and Future Professionals on everything hair, including adding a curly-haired doll head into our new student kits!

Evie said, “The salon industry is designed to help people look and feel better about themselves inside and out. We have failed as an industry if someone walks into our salon and feels we are not capable of performing services on their hair. At this natural hair training, I was able to walk away with so much more knowledge and experience so that I can successfully work with extra curly coiled hair. I’m excited to pass on that same knowledge to our students.”

As Evie demonstrated on her doll head, she explained that with some hair types, we cocktail product and mix them all together, but with coily hair it is important to layer each product. Using the Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint line, she demonstrated the process of paneling using the acronym L.O.C.: leave-in, oil, then cream, before styling with finger coils. Thanks for the demonstration Evie!

We encourage you to celebrate Black History Month by learning more about these topics. You can do this by tuning in to Winn Claybaugh’s Masters Podcast titled “An Inside Look at Black Hair and Culture”.
