Idaho TRIO Alumni Connections

Comments

January is National Mentorship Month and we would like to take a moment to acknowledge all of the mentors out there making a difference in students lives.

Boise State education major Yolanda Martinez is one of those students impacted by the power of mentorship. Martinez was a TRIO student in high school and is currently in the TRIO Teacher Preparation Program at Boise State.

“I have a mentor and I am a mentor and I think it’s really neat because you have somebody along the way, so if you have questions or there’s something you’re unsure about you have somebody to lean on” said Martinez.

She is one of the many success stories of the TRIO Programs and she is giving back by volunteering her summers to the TRIO Upward Bound Summer Program—a program that encourages first-generation and low income students to go on after high school. Martinez is a residential mentor which means she gives students advice and answers questions and concerns about living on a college campus away from home. She takes the role seriously and has kept in contact with her mentees and offers to write letters of recommendation for scholarship applications.

Mentorships have the power to change lives and often both parties involved gain something from mentor-mentee relationship. Do/did you have a mentor? Send them a quick thank you today.

Idaho TRIO Alumni Connections
The State Department of Education's GEAR UP Program Coordinator, Patty Alonzo, was recently awarded the 2019 IATP Distinguished TRIO Alumna Award by Idaho TRIO Alumni Connections for her active support of the TRIO program! TRIO is a collection of nationwide programs that help first generation and/or limited-income students enter college. In her keynote speech, Ms. Alonzo stressed the great importance of the support she received from the Boise State University TRIO Upward Bound program and its instructors. As a TRIO alumna and GEAR UP Idaho Coordinator, Ms. Alonzo continuously works toward providing opportunity and hope for students as they navigate determining their college plans and their futures. Congratulations Patty!

I know this isn't strictly "alumni" content, but my hope is some in this group might appreciate this. I'm sure some of you have been on a similar trip in the past.
Here's a video from day one of BSU Upward Bound's recent summer college tour (still in progress at time of posting, in fact):

Welcome Idaho TRIO Alumni Family and Friends.....I am looking for as many Upward Bound, ETS, VUB, SSS, UBMS and McNair students that I can find from our state.

Spread the word, make TRiO connections, hear updates, and reconnect with old friends.

Great TRIO news!

TRIO Programs Receive Record Funding in House Spending Bill for Fiscal Year 2022

July 11, 2021

Today, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education ("LHHS") released its funding bill for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022. Under this bill, the Federal TRIO Programs would receive a record increase of $200.8 million or a 18% increase, for a total appropriation of $1.3 billion for FY 2022 (program year 2022-23). This appropriation would be the same level as the Biden Administration's request.

TRIO FY 2022 funding will support the upcoming competitions for Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math-Science, Veterans Upward Bound, and the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Education Program, as well as continuation awards for all current grantees.

This is the largest investment of any Congress in college access and success for low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities. The bill also would increase the maximum Pell grant to $6,895 and provide a $40 million increase or 10% increase for GEAR UP for a total appropriation of $408 million.

The TRIO increase in this bill is a major step for TRIO students and families and the educators who serve them. If enacted, an even greater number of low-income and first-generation students, and students with disabilities - up to 150,000 additional students - will have access to the individualized programs and services they need to attain a postsecondary education.

The Subcommittee is expected to debate and vote on the LHHS funding bill on Monday, July 12th, beginning at 11 A.M. Eastern. You can watch the Subcommittee markup here. The full House Appropriations Committee is expected to vote on the LHHS funding bill on Thursday, July 15th, after which congressional leaders have stated they plan to bring the bill to a vote in the full House of Representatives by the end of July. The Senate is expected to release its funding bill for LHHS after Senators return from the August state work period.

It is the work of TRIO educators, parents, students and alumni that have brought us to this point. If your House Representative is a Member of the House LHHS Appropriations Subcommittee, please urge them to vote in favor of this strong TRIO funding increase in this bill. For all other Members of Congress, please thank them for their past support and ask them to support this TRIO funding increase as the spending bill moves forward this year. Contact info for all Representatives can be found here.

Sincerely,

Maureen Hoyler
President
