As a handful of you know, we had an urgent situation with Harper today and needed kiddos picked up quickly. That was a first for us, ever, and I wanted to give a little background so you understand what’s been going on with her these past few years.

Harper has Blood‑Injection‑Injury (BII) phobia — something I jokingly say I “mom‑diagnosed,” but it’s supported by her pediatrician and counselor. It shows up as extreme fear around doctors, pain, dentists, being hurt, or seeing her own blood. We don’t know why she has it, but we’ve been navigating it for a long time without knowing what it was until this spring.

To give an idea: she was so afraid of getting hurt learning to ride her bike that she only learned a month or two ago. Or recently, she bit her tongue, it bled a little, and she fainted from the vasovagal response. (Lennon’s mom — I’m still so sorry for that day.)

BII phobia isn’t very common, and she’s in counseling to understand it and learn tools to manage it. She’s made great progress.

We also believe she may have hypoglycemia, but because of her phobia, we can’t do blood tests yet to confirm. So it’s a bit of a puzzle.

Today, we’re not entirely sure what caused her sudden illness or why she was in and out of consciousness before bouncing back. It could be another branch of her phobia, something gastrointestinal, hypoglycemia‑related, or something else entirely. We’ll be following up with her counselor & GI specialist, while checking in with pediatrician to work through it.

We’re so sorry for the scare today. We hope it never happens again, and we do have a plan in place if it does. Thank you for your grace this week — for Tuesday, for today, for picking up your littles so quickly, and for understanding. This year has been… a strange one, and I’m more than ready for it to wrap up.

I’ll keep you all posted as we learn more. You know I like to keep everyone informed so there are as few surprises as possible.

Just a few updates for the week ahead:

• Isabel’s car will be back at our home on the days she’s with us starting this week. I’ll be parked in the garage, and Dave will be right behind me in the driveway, which should keep street parking open for you all. We officially have a newly licensed driver in the house — so proud of you, Bel!

• We will be closed Tuesday as our family attends Dave’s brother’s funeral. I’ll be completely unavailable that day so I can be fully present with him. We’ll follow up and respond to any messages on Wednesday.

• The weather looks beautiful this week, so please dress your little ones for the warmer temps. We’re planning to head outside in the mornings.

• Emotions may ebb and flow this week as Dave moves through grief. Thank you for your patience, gentleness, and understanding.

I’ve updated our June closure schedule:
June 2nd will be closed and unpaid, and we will now be open on June 15th.

Looking ahead, both Harper and Dave may need surgery this year. If that happens, we may shift or cancel some planned days off to balance things out. As we learn more, we’ll keep everyone updated.

This has definitely been the most unpredictable year, and we truly appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate all of life’s curveballs.
