Superintendent Sherri Ybarra is now recruiting applicants to serve on her new Student Advisory Council! Interested Idaho students in grades 3-12 should apply by June 25 using our online form: https://form.jotform.com/IdahoSDE/studentadvisorycouncil

“Our students have so much to contribute to the shaping of education in Idaho, and I love every opportunity I have to interact with them and hear their insights,” said Supt. Ybarra. “Do you know a student who would love to have a direct role in improving education for students across the state and in the meantime gain important skills in leadership, public speaking, decision-making, team-building and networking? Please encourage them to apply.”

Twelve student applicants will be chosen to serve on the Student Advisory Council, which will meet quarterly throughout the 2021-22 school year (some meetings will be held virtually). Applications must include a signed waiver by a parent or guardian, and students must be accompanied by an adult to Boise or an alternate location for quarterly meetings. The state will provide a stipend to cover travel from home to the meeting location and reimbursement for meals and lodging, if applicable, according to Idaho state guidelines and rates.

Apprenticeship Is Back—And It’s About Time

"Once upon a time, apprenticeship involved a young person being indentured to work under an established tradesman, thereby learning the trade. Today, it’s so much more. According to the U.S. Department of Labor and Apprenticeship.gov, “Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally recognized credential.”

Apprenticeship Is Back—And It’s About Time It’s the hot new way to get ahead, but parents and educators aren’t promoting it.

Know a rockstar? Nominate an incredible Idaho teacher!

Superintendent Sherri Ybarra is excited to announce that nominations are now being accepted for Idaho's top teaching honor, Teacher of the Year! Anyone can nominate a special teacher for 2022 Idaho Teacher of the Year by filling out our online form: www.sde.idaho.gov/toy

“Public school teachers in all parts of Idaho, all subjects and grade levels are eligible for this honor, and we know how many passionate, innovative teachers are out there who inspire their students to dream and achieve,” Superintendent Ybarra said. “Last year more than 170 amazing teachers were nominated, and I hope to see even more this year. Please take a few moments to tell us why your favorite educator deserves to be Idaho’s 2022 Teacher of the Year.”

Nominations will be accepted through Monday, April 5; nominated teachers will be notified and will have until May 17 to apply for the honor. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, and the winning teacher will be announced in September during a surprise visit to their school.

The 2022 Teacher of the Year will receive a cash award and travel across Idaho talking with other teachers, legislators and policymakers about education in our state. She or he will serve as Idaho’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year, which will be decided in the spring.

This school year’s Idaho Teacher of the Year is Jorge Pulleiro, a Dual Immersion Spanish teacher at Wood River Middle School who is passionate about the importance of cross-cultural competence and connecting emotionally with students. Other recent winners include: 2020 Teacher of the Year Stacie Lawler, a health and physical education teacher at Timberlake Junior High School; 2019 winner Marc Beitia, an American Falls High School agriculture instructor and FFA advisor; and Vision Charter School chemistry and language arts teacher Becky Mitchell, Teacher of the Year for 2018.
