Creating a Creators’ Market: How Ethnography Gave Intel a New Perspective On Digital Content Creators - EPIC

Creating a Creator's Market
ken anderson + team, Intel Corporation
Intel social scientists felt a new market segmentation was missing the mark—it relied on standard measures of status and computational needs, not the emerging socio-technical relationships that ethnographic research was detecting. This is the story of how they leveraged cumulative research, primed stakeholders to adopt ethnographic insights, and drove impact with a totally new segmentation. Boise State College of Innovation + Design Boise State University Aspiring Anthropologists This case demonstrates how ongoing ethnographic research from within a corporation led to the re-segmentation of a market.

Ethnography Disrupts Big Data Path Dependency
Jacob Wachman + team, ReD Associates
"Tell us what's meaningful to customers so our data scientists can create KPIs," says the client. But why do so many organizations fail to leverage their data well—even when researchers deliver valid insights about what matters? Jacob's team at ReD Associates recommends more strategic, effective approaches for ethnographers working with data science, data systems, and digitization projects. Meet soon to be Design Ethnography Alumni Katherine Kappelman. Find out what a non-traditional student such as Katherine has gained from taking DEC courses.

Meet Katherine Kappelman, a Boise State University student pursuing the Design Ethnography Certificate! |

"The first time I ever heard the term design ethnography was the fall of 2016 when an anthropology grad student visited one of the three anthropology courses in which I was enrolled and gave a brief pitch to introduce the course work for a new certificate being offered by the Anthropology Department. I had just returned to university studies as a nontraditional student, had not yet decided on a major, and was clueless about the world of user experience design (UXD), design thinking, rapid ethnography, and design ethnography, but I was intrigued by what I heard. The Design Ethnography Certificate became a part of my academic plan almost immediately.

Taking DEC courses was an intellectually invigorating and challenging experience for me, as everything I was learning was completely new, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Having worked as a flight attendant and substitute teacher for many years I thought my understanding of human behavior and my ability to empathize were well developed but studying design ethnography elevates understanding human behavior and empathizing to a whole different level. Through the DEC coursework I acquired skills that help me see the world through the eyes of others and to understand their thinking on a topic without being invasive or intrusive, and I became aware of the degree to which human behavior is the impetus that inspires change, not vice-versa. These skills and insights can be applied to many aspects of daily life and I continue to use them regularly.

The Design Ethnography Certificate coursework provided me an enriching academic experience with even greater rewards, and I will always be grateful to James Nelson for bringing it to my attention that day in class.”

Boise State University

U.S. News and World Report Names Boise State One of the Nation’s Tops for Innovation.

Boise State joins fellow western universities including Stanford, Cal Tech, University of Washington and UCLA on this year’s list. It is Boise State’s first time on the Most Innovative list, and just the second year Boise State has been categorized as a “National University,” which came on the heels of its emergence in 2015 as a doctoral research university in the Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Education.

“This is yet another testament to the culture of imagination and continuous development and improvement that exists across the campus of Boise State University,” said interim president Martin Schimpf.

“Our Boise State Honors College recently moved into a $43 million home and has grown to about 1,000 high-achieving students who choose Boise State over top universities around the country. We just earned accreditation for the nation’s first and only online master’s degree in genetic counseling. We are Idaho’s fastest-growing research enterprise and the state’s largest graduate school. Others are taking notice.”

Boise State College of Innovation + Design serves as a crucible of education innovation, launching programs including the recent Passport to Education — a public-private partnership in which members of the inaugural partner, CapEd Credit Union, can complete customized college degrees on a subscription that will save them thousands over a traditional program.

This last semester, students in the Design Ethnography Certificate program were contracted by Southwest District Health to collect qualitative data on various communities in SW Idaho. Over the course of a year, hired students traveled to these towns to interview and observe the people there. In this meetup, students, teachers, and professionals all shared their thoughts on how these communities could receive health services more effectively based on the data collected. Students and professionals used sticky notes to move and group together the unique traits of each town. Affinity mapping and other user-experience skills can be learned in the online Design Ethnography Certificate courses.
