THIS is why you buckle your kids into their car seats correctly every SINGLE time. Even when they scream because the straps are tight. Even when they complain about the chest clip or being rear facing. We stopped for milk on the way home from preschool yesterday. We were minutes from home. Someone sped through a red light and slammed into us. You never think it will happen to you. My boys escaped without a scratch but the paramedics told me it could have been very different had I not taken the extra 2 minutes to be sure they were buckled correctly. I will be fine, my kids are fine, everything else can be replaced. Sending thanks to God for keeping us safe (along with Honda, Graco & Chicco). -Jenna Casado Rabberman

This video shows the effects of a head on collision on a forward facing toddler vs. a rear facing toddler. YOUR CHILD IS MUCH SAFER REAR FACING. This is why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children stay rear facing as long as their CONVERTIBLE seats allow - that means until about age 4 for most kids. Nearly all convertible seats can be used rear facing to at least 40 pounds and 40" tall.
NOTE : The forward facing seat in this video is NOT secured as well as it should be. The seatbelt is a bit loose & the top tether is not anchored. All forward facing car seats are designed with a top tether strap that attaches to an anchor point in the car. This vastly improves performance but is often forgotten by parents. Some older vehicles are not equipped with an anchor point, and all car seats must pass testing without the tether in use.
Even with the top tether anchored, a toddler's head can still be thrown forward violently enough to permanently damage the spinal column when forward facing.
These videos show the difference much more accurately:
This article has more specific info on rear facing, including details on rear and side impact collisions and the safety and comfort of children whose legs touch the back of the rear seat. https://www.howtosafety.com/safety-topics/rear-facing/rear-facing-car-seats-basics-science-crash-dynamics/
