This intimate performance will feature soloists Amanda Gardner Porter, Victoria Esposito, Sable Strout, Patrick Starke, and Jack Canfield (the later four are Opera Idaho's Emerging Artists), and the Boise Baroque Orchestra.

Featuring:

Amanda Gardner Porter, Soprano
Victoria Esposito, Soprano
Sable Strout, Mezzo-soprano
Patrick Starke, Tenor
Jack Canfield, Baritone
C Michael Porter, Conductor

Bach's Mass in B minor is one of the most profound and astounding spiritual testaments ever composed. It is the summation of Bach's lifetime of creating music. Unlike the majority of his music, which was written for church services, Bach wrote it to leave a musical legacy. It represents an attempt to both summarize the tradition of the Mass in a single perfect specimen and leave a statement on the nature of sacred music as a bequest to the future.

Meet the creative team for our production of CARMEN: Director, Andrew Nienaber and Conductor, Michael Sakir.

✨Andrew Nienaber's productions of The Barber of Seville have been called "a rousing success" by the Winston-Salem Journal, and “legitimately hilarious” by Berkshire Fine Arts, and his Elixir of Love for Resonance Works Pittsburgh, awarded the American Prize for "Best Opera Performance of the Year", was hailed as "utterly, fabulously engaging," and "…one of the most charming entertainment experiences you can have this season…"
His other directing credits include Tosca for l'Opera de Montreal, Opera Idaho, Opera Birmingham and Permian Basin Opera, Rusalka for Resonance Works Pittsburgh, The Magic Flute for Piedmont Opera and The Elixir of Love for Opera Idaho and Hubbard Hall Opera. He currently serves as the first Artistic Director in Permian Basin Opera’s history, helping to guide the company’s artistic vision as they venture into the business of producing opera.

✨Conductor Michael Sakir has been praised for his "artistic authority," "fluidity of expression," and "great delicacy of feeling." He serves as the Artistic Director of Intermountain Opera Bozeman and Music Director of the Opera Company of Middlebury. He recently completed his fourth and final season as Music Director of Opera Memphis, with whom he was deeply involved in the company's groundbreaking civic practice programs, community partnerships, and commissioning projects.

In the 2021-2022 season, Sakir conducts The Barber of Seville and Le nozze di Figaro with Intermountain Opera Bozeman and Tchaikovsky's rarely-heard masterpiece The Maid of Orleans with the Opera Company of Middlebury. Meet our leading ladies for tomorrow’s Opera in the Park!

⭐️Returning to Opera Idaho is Soprano, Vanessa Isiguen, who was last seen in our recent production of Madama Butterfly. Acclaimed by the New York Times as “Radiant”, Vanessa Isiguen recently joined the roster at the Metropolitan Opera to cover the dual role of Kitty/ Vanessa in the premiere of The Hours by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Greg Pierce, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Kensho Watanabe. She began the 2022-2023 season as a soloist with the Oregon Symphony at Portland’s beloved Waterfront Concert under the baton of David Danzmayr, and made her Dublin debut in the title role of Madama Butterfly with the Opera of Ireland.

⭐️Mezzo-soprano, Lisa Chavez, makes her Opera Idaho debut this weekend. Lisa Chavez has been described as possessing a “plush storm of a voice”, “graceful stage presence” as well as being “a powerhouse both vocally and emotionally”. This season Ms. Chavez returned to Sarasota Opera for the title character of Massenet's Thérèse, and Fidalma in Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto. That marked 10 roles with Sarasota Opera.

Welcome to Idaho, ladies! 🤗 Be sure to catch them tomorrow at OPERA IN THE PARK, Boise!
7:30p, Gene Harris Bandshell, Julia Davis Park. It’s FREE!

Opera in the Park is THIS Saturday, July 8th, 7:30p.
Let’s meet our soloists, Boise!

⭐️ Making his Opera Idaho debut, meet Tenor, Rafael Moras. Hailed for his ability to communicate “…romance and heartbreak with his soaring tenor tones,” by Broadway World and “..heroic bravado…”, “…acting chops…”, and “…irresistible mix of Italianate and Latin passion…” by Musical America Worldwide, Opera News, and Classical Voice North America respectively, Rafael Moras is a rising star of the opera and classical music world whose voice, stage presence, and ability to speak off-the-cuff with an audience continues to connect in opera houses and intimate concert hall settings alike.

⭐️ You might recognize our baritone soloist from last season’s CELEBRANDO A MÉXICO. We are so thrilled to have Baritone, Levi Hernández joining us for this wonderful community event. With a velvety tone and a stage presence which exudes confidence and charm, Levi Hernández has made a name for himself in a wide variety of baritone repertoire. Opera News has praised him for his “voice with natural power,” and “warm, inviting baritone.” The El Paso native has joined the rosters of leading opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Houston Grand Opera where he debuted as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly opposite Ana Maria Martinez and Joseph Calleja.

🎶 Come hear them this Saturday, Treasure Valley. Nearly 2,000 Idahoans attended last year to enjoy over two hours of free music at the Gene Harris Bandshell in Julia Davis Park. Join us as we perform highlights from our upcoming season, opera favorites, and musical theatre selections. We will have seven food trucks and three vendors at the beer and wine garden! Help spread the word! See you there, friends.

RUSALKA/The Little Mermaid parallel connections!🧜🏽‍♀️

Last, but not least, meet the Ariel and Prince Eric equivalents: Rusalka and Princ.

Both artists portraying these characters are no strangers to Opera Idaho. Princ will be beautifully sung by Tenor, Chaz’men Williams-Ali (): previously seen as Pinkerton in our 2018 production of Madama Butterfly. Rusalka will be performed by our Idahoan, Mexican-American soprano, Cecilia Violetta López.

✨Tonight is the night, Treasure Valley.✨

As our leading lady, , says, “opera is for everyone,” y en español “la ópera es para todos.” 👏👏👏 We couldn’t agree more!

Come see this fairytale unfold at the Egyptian Theatre () this weekend. Come see if Rusalka and Princ get their “happily ever after” like in the Disney film and be immersed in the beautiful music composed by Antonin Dvorak. Get your tickets at OPERAIDAHO.ORG. 🎟️

We are thrilled to be welcoming back former OI Mezzo-soprano Emerging Artist, Tahanee Aluwihare (), as the spell-casting witch! Baritone, Zachary Altman is making his Opera Idaho debut singing the role of Vodnik, Rusalka’s father. Welcome to Idaho, .

This magical tale premieres tomorrow, Boise. ✨ There are only 2 performances. Go to OPERAIDAHO.ORG to get your tickets—but hurry! Only a few single tickets remain for Friday. More RUSALKA/The Little Mermaid parallel connections!🧜🏽‍♀️

Much like Ariel, RUSALKA also has sisters and is surrounded by magical creatures.

A huge shoutout to our female chorus (Rusalka’s sisters) comprised of the Oi Resident Company, and the artists playing the roles of the Wood Sprites: Hana Jung, Ashley Kay Armstrong and Cornelia Lotito, our Mezzo-soprano Emerging Artist.
Notice—Cornelia is pulling double-duty. 💪👏👏👏

Photos from Opera Idaho's post 04/18/2023

Let’s start making parallel connections with movies we’ve seen to further explain who these characters in RUSALKA are.

In the Disney animated film, The Little Mermaid, Ursula turns into her human, alter ego, Vanessa, to sabotage Ariel’s “happily every after” with Prince Eric, right? Well, in Dvorak’s RUSALKA, the character more or less equivalent to Vanessa is The Foreign Princess. Rebecca Achtenberg, our Soprano Emerging Artist, will be appearing as the prince’s betrothed. 👑 It’s been great having you be a part of the OI team, !

Come see if The Foreign Princess shares the same fate as the Disney film depicts. 🌊
There are two performances, Boise! April 21 and 23 at the ! Get your tickets to RUSALKA at OPERAIDAHO.ORG!
