Sam Haskell will defend her project titled "Cancel Culture: A Qualitative Analysis of the Social Media Practice of Canceling" next month.

Location: https://boisestate.zoom.us/j/97569722576
Date and Time: 05/24/2021, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Committee: Dr. Manda Hicks (chair), Dr. Rulon Wood, and Dr. Rick Moore
Abstract:
Unlike previous forms of public shaming, canceling is a product of Web 2.0 and the boom of social media. The act of canceling is inherently tied to the word “canceled”, however, how the public defines a cancelation is not static. Instead, how those on social media partake and understand canceling is due to consistent strategies that emerge during a cancelation. In this research, I conducted a case study of the cancelation of Kevin Spacey that took place in 2017.
Over 1700 tweets discussing Kevin Spacey’s cancelation were captured in order to determine the process of canceling. Through qualitative content analysis, multiple strategies were revealed that
illuminated how the public utilizes social media to participate in cancel culture. This research demonstrates how canceling functions and the strategies that appear throughout the process of a
cancelation.

We want you to succeed. Here are some things that can help.

Let’s face it. It’s not easy asking for help. But we want everyone to know we care about our students and want to help them succeed.

Students who need some extra help with classes can get tutoring and other academic help online. It’s a great resource to help students keep on top of class work.

Students struggling to meet basic needs—food, bills, etc.-the Office of the Dean of Students offers a number of resources that exist specifically to help students through difficult situations.

Students having trouble adjusting to remote classes should start by talking to their professors. Let them know they’re struggling. They want to help students do well, even if that help has to be from a distance. Students should also take a look at the tips and tools on the Learning Remotely web page and get familiar with all of the resources available to them.

It’s hard being responsible and self-isolating and having a social life—all of us are feeling that. We’ve compiled a list of ways for students to connect with people from a distance.

| YOUR CALL IS IMPORTANT TO US |

If you've tried to call in the last few weeks, you might have been waiting on hold for a while.

Everything around you has been impacted by COVID this year, and for us this means more students than ever have been reaching out to us for help. We're happy to be here to help you, but sadly this means you might be waiting on hold longer than usual. We notice higher call volume from noon until the end of the day, where you may be on hold for up to an hour.

We know that this is not an ideal situation for anyone, and have a few tips that can help you get assistance as quickly as possible!

First, if you can call before noon you will be able to speak with a representative much faster.

Our second tip if you live in the area, is to swing by in-person. Our office is still open to serve you Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. We are located in Admin Building Rm. 113. To keep our campus community safe, please wear a facial covering over your nose and mouth, maintain 6ft of distance from others in line, and bring a pen with you if possible.

We know that being a student during a pandemic isn't easy or what you signed up for, but we're here to help you make it through. Please reach out to our office at 208-426-1664, or [email protected] - we look forward to speaking with you!

Zoom Video Conferencing | Boise State University 04/24/2020

Dear students, faculty and staff, with the transition online here are some tips for using Zoom:

Faculty and instructors should sign into Zoom before starting, joining or clicking a link to a Zoom meeting to be able to utilize the host and security controls of your meeting. In order to bypass the "Waiting Room" students should sign into Zoom before joining the meeting. We recommend that instructors schedule Zoom meetings using the Zoom Blackboard LTI in their Blackboard shell to schedule meetings (this will automatically add your T.A. as a co-host).

Two easy ways to sign into Zoom:
1. Go to https://boisestate.zoom.us/ and enter your username and password.
2. Instructors and students can add Zoom to the services menu in the landing page in myBoiseState for easy access. This link describes how to do that: https://www.boisestate.edu/oit-myboisestate/customize-your-services-in-myboisestate/
