Join us in the Habit of the Month!

Habit 1: Be Proactive® means we are in charge of ourselves. Proactive leaders choose to use proactive language. Proactive language is “can do” language. It sounds like “I can do it,” or “I will find a way.” Reactive language sounds like, “You made me,” or “I have to…”

Engage your student with questions like: "If you use negative words, how does it make you feel? If you use positive words, how do you feel differently? What is an example of proactive language? How does using proactive language show leadership?" At Village Leadership Academy our students are learning and growing in their use of proactive language as part of of our daily activities.

Starting now, we're highlighting a habit of the month! The first is a LIM favorite: Be Proactive!

Being Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life and recognizing that you alone have the power to choose your behavior. Take time this weekend to reflect on your past week. What behaviors did you choose this week? Were they useful? Looking back, would you choose a different behavior?

Please welcome our new Special Education Teacher, Meagan McCarthy. Meagan will be teaching our MAC Classroom (Multi-Age Classroom). She is coming to us with several years of experience serving special education students.

Mrs. Huwa will be serving students online at another school this coming year. We are sad to see her go but excited for her to support students in her new position next year.

We will be providing our Special Education students more information in the coming weeks about how to meet Mrs. McCarthy before school starts in the Fall.

Below is a brief bio from Mrs. McCarthy:

"Hello Families!

My name is Meagan McCarthy. I just moved to Boise from Tucson Arizona. I started my teaching career in Oregon for an Education Service District school for students with social / emotional needs teaching K-4. After three years there I moved to Tucson Arizona where I was the middle school teacher for the district's social / emotional classroom. I incorporate social emotional learning into my classroom to help my students gain skills for them to be successful in life. I enjoy hiking, camping, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. I'm excited to join the team here at The Village and I'm looking forward to a great school year"!

Please give a warm welcome to our new 2nd grade teacher, Mrs Rodden. She is joining us from Forge International School.

Mrs. Dethman, our previous 2nd Grade Teacher, is moving to 1st grade to take on our additional 1st Grade classroom, alongside Mrs. Cox. Please read more about this wonderful addition to our TVCS teaching staff.

"Hello! My name is Jacquee Rodden and I am very delighted to be joining the TVCS team! I grew up in West Wendover, Nevada with two younger brothers. Then I attended Boise State University here in Boise, Idaho, where I earned a B.A. in Elementary Education and an endorsement in Mathematics. During college I met my husband and we got married in 2017. We now have lots of lovely plants! Some of my favorite things are hiking, cycling, yoga, and crafting, but you can get to my heart through almond milk mochas and chocolate! I wholeheartedly believe that it takes a village to support a student in their learning, so I look forward to becoming a part of the TVCS community, contributing to the network of caring individuals that help our students grow! "

There has been some shuffling around of a few teachers this summer. Ms Norman has moved to Middle School Math. So we are thrilled to announce that Mrs LeCheminant will be teaching 5th grade. Mrs LeCheminant is joining us from Idaho Arts Charter School. She has written a short introduction so that we can learn more about her:

"I am thrilled to be teaching fifth grade at The Village Charter School. I am originally from Illinois, and I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, where I double-majored in automotive technology and journalism. Later, I took a job as a recreation manager in Pinedale, Wyoming, and discovered my love for working with kids. I returned to school to earn my graduate certificate in teaching elementary school from the University of Wyoming. I have taught fourth and fifth grade students in Wyoming and Idaho for the last three years, and I love learning alongside my students. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my husband, Alex, and our dog, Sonny. Together, we go hiking, fishing and skiing. "

TVCS teachers spend part of their summer in professional development courses. We are constantly seeking more effective ways to help our students learn and looking for more creative and engaged ways to assess their learning. Your K-1 teachers have spent time during June strengthening our math educator skills. Mrs Cox spent a week in the Teaching Mathematical Thinking course through the Regional Math Center. Mrs Dethman, Mrs Affleck and Miss Coles spent two days in the course titled Building Number Sense. It was also through the Regional Math Center, located at BSU.

The TVCS school year has concluded, but the memories we made together this year will live on forever. One of those memories is our annual kindergarten field day. Thank you to the parents & staff who helped to make it happen. The smiles on our students faces show us why "this was the best day ever" (in the words of one kindergartner)!

June 1 - August 15, 2021 | Boise Public Library

One of the best things we can do for our children to keep their minds sharp is to have them read, read, read! The Boise Public Library, as well as other local libraries, have fun reading programs to engage all ages in reading this summer.

" Summer reading is critical to student success; it allows kids to seamlessly build upon what they are learning from one year to the next. When kids don’t read over the summer, they are at risk of entering the next grade level having lost important momentum and key academic skills from the previous school year over break. "
