British animal painter Edwin Landseer transformed dog portraiture in many ways, which took on a new level of sophistication that combined wit with a moral message. His unique ability to humanise dogs largely contributed to his popularity among the Victorian public.

Trial by Jury, also known as Laying down the Law, satirises the legal profession using dogs in the roles of members of the court, with a French poodle centre stage as the judge. Painted in 1840, it was inspired by a discussion Landseer had with a judge who said that the French poodle belonging to socialite the Comte d’Orsay ‘would make a capital Lord Chancellor’. The painting was acquired the year of its completion by William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, who had Landseer add his Blenheim spaniel, Bony, behind the greyhound.

The work was particularly well received by its contemporary audience, including a critic who wrote that it captured ‘at once the characteristic peculiarities of canine nature and the absurdities of judicial administration’.

Remembering all of our lost loved ones, especially the ones who have served our country. And all the poodles who have loved all the people who have served.

EDIT: A bark collar has been gifted! And it is a game changer. She has only zapped herself two or three times, and it is on the lowest setting so not traumatic at all, just little buzz really. And it is helping her stay calmer - because she can't get herself all worked up, she has to stop and think through a situation before responding. In the nearly 30 years of rescuing and rehabilitating standard poodles, I've only had to resort to the bark collar two or three times, and always after exhausting all other options and avenues. This was clearly the right choice for this situation. Thank a gazillion Janet for this tool.

Treasure Valley poodle people: I need to ask for help. I need to borrow a bark collar, hopefully for just a few weeks. I have a new rescue who has spent her entire life in either the puppy mill or the pet store she was sold to for eight months. She has almost no social skills with humans and human life. Lately, she has been going on a barking and howling jag, at all hours of the day and night. This isn't just a bit of woofing here and there like a normal poodle trying to communicate. I'm not sure what it is, but my neighbors do not deserve to deal with this. If I pen her in the house, she poops and pees. If I put her in her kennel, she poops and pees in there. She is very responsive and very smart, just very uneducated. She did learn the doggie door in just three days, so having a bark collar will allow her to continue her housebreaking training. Just a loan. I will give it back.
