Comm 294/494 Idaho Public Advocacy Jan 25-26 (in-person)
This workshop will explore methods and tools for advocacy before the Idaho legislature. The course will provide students with the opportunity to learn about, discuss, and practice written and oral policy advocacy via simulations and assignments. Students will learn about Idaho’s legislative process, how to navigate Idaho's legislative website, and develop skills in lobbying and testifying before legislative committees. Students will also learn the fundamentals of developing a policy advocacy campaign.

Comm 294/494 Accessible Public Debate Mar 1-2 (remote)
This workshop will establish a foundation for developing argumentation and critical evaluation skills. To achieve these goals, the workshop will utilize the Public Debate structure as a framework to invite learners to engage in creating and responding to refutation. While argument construction is key to debate, this workshop will also provide individuals with the tools to evaluate and compare constructed debate messages. Simply put, participants will learn how to debate within the Public format and how to judge a structured debate. Within the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice their newly acquired skills during live exhibition debates.

✨Student Spotlight✨ The Department of Communication is thrilled to shine our first student spotlight on Jules Vetter (BA, Communication, Class of 2025), an exceptional student, community member, and leader. Under the mentorship of Dr. Cody Coker, Jules is not just working on a grant-funded study but leading it with exceptional skill and dedication. The study investigates the experiences of empowerment, self-efficacy, and work-life management among students on campus.

Jules is collecting interview data from students across campus to understand factors contributing to students’ well-being and success at mid-sized Northwestern universities. The data should culminate in multiple research papers, conference presentations, and campus conversations to help faculty, staff, and students harness a sense of empowerment and self-efficacy while managing (course)work and social interests. The study’s findings will yield helpful guidance for developing practices and resources to promote student well-being and success in classrooms, across campus, and at work.

In addition to these research endeavors, Jules is actively engaged in the communication program and campus community. Jules excels in coursework, mentors students in a research methods course, participates in extracurricular activities (Lambda Pi Eta), leads in the Boise State MakerLab, and works as a fellow with the Center for Teaching and Learning.

We look forward to the valuable insights these studies will bring to the broader campus community. We are proud to have such a dedicated and driven student representing our communication program and confident that Jules’s work will contribute significantly to improving the experiences of students on campus
