Where flight training can take you: Picabo, Idaho.

One of the best parts of learning to fly is realizing that the map starts to feel a little bigger — and the day trip possibilities get a lot more fun.

Picabo is a small south-central Idaho stop near Silver Creek, surrounded by open fields, wide skies, and classic Idaho scenery. It is the kind of destination that reminds you flying is not just about building hours. It is about building confidence, seeing new places, and turning an ordinary day into an adventure.

This flight ended with a stop at The Grill at Picabo Angler — because sometimes the best training days come with a destination.

Where would you fly?

Thinking about earning your Private Pilot License but not sure where to start?

Your Private Pilot License is where every pilot’s story begins. It is the foundation for what can come next — instrument training, commercial training, flight instruction — or simply the freedom to fly on your own terms.

At Carmel Aviation, students train one-on-one with a Certified Flight Instructor at Boise Airport, working through ground school, flight training, FAA testing, and the final checkride with guidance and confidence.

The FAA minimum is 40 hours of flight time, but most students complete their PPL between 55 and 70 hours depending on how often they fly, how much they study at home, and their individual pace.

Every pilot starts at step one.

With 81L back online and ready to fly, we couldn’t think of a better time to announce something we’ve been working on. Our new Backcountry Flying Course! This program is built for pilots who want to take their skills off the pavement and into the Idaho backcountry. Here’s what you can expect:

Ground Training

We’ll cover everything you need to think and plan like a backcountry pilot: aircraft performance, mountain weather theory, backcountry operations, and more.

Flight Training

Get hands-on experience with short and soft field operations, energy management principles, canyon flying procedures, and actual landings at our approved backcountry strips. Expect roughly 4-6 hours of flight training spread across 3-4 flights.

Requirements

If you hold at least a PPL and have 50 hours of PIC time, 25 hours PIC in the last 6 months, and 10 hours in a C172 in the last 90 days, you’re ready to get started! Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis

How to Enroll

Stop by or contact the front desk, and we’ll pair you with one of our backcountry-qualified instructors: Aimee, Kyle, or Zane. This is a course unlike anything else we offer, and we’re excited to share it with you. We hope to see you out there!

We’re proud to sponsor the Idaho Aviation Association webcams in Stanley and at our Boise office — because better visibility means safer, smarter flying.

These live weather cams give pilots real‑time insight into weather and runway conditions, helping them plan confidently at airports that may not have weather reporting capabilities

Supporting these webcams isn’t just about technology — it’s about community, safety, and connection. Every pilot who checks the cams before a flight benefits from clearer skies and better decisions.

The U.S. has more than 5,000 public‑use airports, giving general aviation pilots access to an incredible network of destinations.
This is why flying can be faster, more flexible, and more direct than driving or commercial travel.
