The last 2 weeks of July were all about cooperative play. I put farm animals out to expand playing with blocks and it became a spot that was constantly used. What I love about my program is the flexibility to change gears and teach what is needed and/or desired by the children. Learning through play should be child led. Having multiple children in one area brings many opportunities to model necessary skills needed to prepare for school. We practice sharing, patience, turn taking, problem solving. Collaboration and communication are also taught. Having hours of uninterrupted play is so important to learn these skills. I am able to sit next to them and help work through disagreements & emotions. Teaching cause and effect of our words and actions. This is meaningful play, an important part of early childhood development and school readiness.

This is how we feel young children should be learning! Collaboration, sensory play, fresh air, science, gross and fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, communication and friendship skills! They will soon have decades requiring them to sit still for hours at a time. Play-based learning is essential!

This week we spent a lot of time outside in the mud kitchen. Inside we focused on hand eye coordination, fine motor and reviewing letter sounds. We also continued mixing colors outside with the colored ice cubes and sand!

Last week was one of my favorite lessons, all about colors!! We learned about primary and secondary colors, what happens when we add black or white to our colors and how light affects color! Colored vinegar dropped into baking soda for fizzy color making! Primary colored ice cubes with hot water droppers to make secondary colors! Tinted shaving cream on our hands mix together for sensory fun! Flashlights with magnatiles was a popular station. They loved seeing how the light reflected the colors throughout the room.

Our ocean theme wrapped up last week! Using kinetic sand and dyed pasta we created our own coral reefs. We also learned about the importance of not littering. Fun Father’s Day gifts were made as well!

Another fun week! We finished the alphabet!!! All the big kids know the letter sounds and the younger kids know many of them too! We will work over the summer on being able to quickly recognize capital and lower case letters. For shapes this week we learned about pentagons. The younger kids learn to recognize the shape while the older kids learn about how pentagons have 5 sides that are all the same size. This helps them correctly draw and be able to tell the difference with similar shapes. June is also our oceans theme. We’ve already studied sea stars and turtles! 🐚🦀🐠🌊
