Did you know that Boise parks and open spaces provide critical habitat for our local wildlife? Mammals such as squirrels, bats, fox, beaver, deer, racoons, marmots, and mink rely on our local parks for food and shelter. Hundreds of species of birds can be seen soaring through Boise parks and nesting in our amazing tree canopy. Additionally, many species of snakes, lizards, frogs, salamanders, and fish call Boise parks home, as well as 1000’s of insects.

To support our local wildlife, it is important for us to be mindful of their presence and respectful of their space. While visiting parks, we should all be sure to give wildlife a wide berth. This includes staying on trails and out of areas reserved for wildlife, controlling our pets, and refraining from feeding wildlife. The less we impact our wildlife and their habitat, the healthier the population will be.

If you would like to get actively involved in supporting our local wildlife, Boise Parks and Recreation coordinates a variety of community science and habitat programs for you to get engaged in. This includes the upcoming City Nature Challenge, Migratory Dragonfly Pond Watch, Pollinator Posse, Weed Warriors, Bee Watch, and more. For more information, please visit our web site: https://www.cityofboise.org/departments/parks-and-recreation/volunteer/

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH TRAIL CONDITION REPORT

A few brief items of note:

MANY trails have significant muddy sections now - see picture of Polecat Loop. Traveling through these areas ruins the trail. Be part of the solution, not the problem - make responsible decisions.
1) Plan routes on trails that have sandier soils https://www.ridgetorivers.org/etiquette/winter-trail-use/
2) Use the trails in the morning before they soften up and turn to mud
3) Please turn around if you encounter muddy conditions.

Last month's trail survey showed that a majority of trail users like the directional experience on Polecat Loop, but wanted the direction to change on an annual basis. As such, we have installed signage along the loop indicating that travel is now in a CLOCKWISE DIRECTION.

Landslide Loop Trail will close for the winter after today. This is to protect wintering wildlife. The trail will open again on March 31, 2022. Here is a link to the trail on our interactive map: https://www.ridgetorivers.org/trails/interactive-map/?trailname=Landslide%20Loop

Upper 8th Street Road will close for the winter after today (November 30). The closure extends from the ATV Trailhead up to the Ridge Road. This is to protect the integrity of the road surface. The road will open again on May 15, 2022.

Thank you and please help us to spread these messages. Happy Trails!
