Gov. Little and his cybersecurity task force announce 18 new recommendations. They will be focusing on election integrity, protecting Idaho's infrastructure, improving the state's cybersecurity field, and enlightening public awareness.
According to the Idaho New 6 article, Little expressed that, “across our state and throughout the nation, there are few more pressing threats to our safety, security, and freedom than cyberattacks. This susceptibility makes the work of the task force so important.”
The task force believes Little should develop a cyber awareness public service campaign for the public bringing awareness to the rise of cyber attacks and the importance of cybersecurity.

Idaho News 6 covered our story on how the Boise State’s Institute for Pervasive Cybersecurity plans to help protect rural communities within the state of Idaho.
Thanks to an economic development grant from the Idaho National Lab (INL), our Institute will be developing new resources to defend Idaho’s rural areas from cyber attackers. The grant also gives Boise State students real-world experience in the environments they may be working in as cybersecurity professionals by pairing them with an experienced mentor to visit these rural communities.
Cyber attacks have become gradually more common as we transition to a digital society. Leaving rural areas being more vulnerable to these attacks. "Part of the challenge they have is they have this data and this infrastructure but being able to engage and work with cyber experts or a career professional can often be really difficult and economically challenging," explained Edward Vasko, Director for the Institute of Pervasive Cybersecurity at Boise State University.

Brother and sister, Arsenio (pictured first) and Alondra Sarmiento (pictured second), are currently in their first year of Undergrad in the Cyber Operations and Resilience (CORe) program at Boise State University. This program prepares students to work in environments where anticipating, detecting, mitigating, and managing cyber, physical, and interdependencies infrastructure threats is crucial. Both, Arsenio and Alondra, seem to agree that courses have opened their eyes to a wide range of cybersecurity experiences and threats such as current events and the opportunity to protect others.
When asked about his decision to pursue a degree in cybersecurity, Arsenio stated, “I decided to pursue cybersecurity because I felt that it would be an exciting adventure to dive into the tech world. Especially in this age where people that have the skills being taught in the program are highly sought after.”
Alondra was previously pursuing a degree in Chemistry, but once the pandemic hit and was forced to attend classes online, she developed an interest in the world of cybersecurity. “I had no idea what cybersecurity was, so I decided to enroll in some cyber classes,” she mentioned, “I discovered that I preferred the cyber classes to any of my chemistry ones.”

Boise State NPR’s George Prentice interviewed Boise State University’s President, Dr. Marlene Tromp. In the recent interview, they touched on cybersecurity and the curriculum stack that Boise State has to offer. She highlights that we are one of the few institutes that offer certificates, bachelor's, master's and PhD programs to anyone with any major.
“We’ve widened the funnel so that we're touching more students and giving them the opportunity to have access to a full range of options to get additional training in cybersecurity so that as they go into their careers, they can become cyber specialists in their own fields,” Dr. Tromp states, “if we're hiring people from across the curriculum, we're going to produce a broader range of cyber experts.”

Meet Samantha (Sam) Anguiano. She is a third-year computer science student pursuing her bachelor’s degree in computer science with an emphasis in cybersecurity. Anguiano was drawn to Boise State’s diverse cybersecurity course offerings.
Before starting her college career, she first heard about the Equifax data breach that exposed 147 million people’s private information, and a global settlement of up to $425 million. Thus, sparking her interest in the complex world of cybersecurity. She finds the evolution of encryption has been especially fascinating, and hopes to work in software development and risk analysis after graduating. Her ultimate goal is to help the common computer user to gain cybersecurity competency and safety.
“I decided to study cyber at Boise State because Boise State is making major investments in furthering the field of cybersecurity as a whole by providing different programs and classes for students to grow their knowledge on cyber topics,” Anguiano said. “It also has plenty of opportunities to get hands-on experience in the cybersecurity field, many coming from the Institute of Pervasive Cybersecurity.”
