Jacob Tsimerman has won the Fields Medal in part for his work proving the André-Oort conjecture. He’s wary of his impulse to win. “I made it an explicit goal for myself not to focus on winning it,” he said. “I was like, ‘Jacob, you can’t become obsessed with it.’”

The mind trick worked, for a time. For nearly two decades, Tsimerman, 38, kept his drive trained on the math itself and became known as one of the most talented problem solvers of his generation.

But as he approached the last cycle in which he’d be eligible for the Fields, he relented and gave himself over to the pursuit.

“Two years ago, I knew I was close, and I did let myself become obsessed,” he said.

We want to congratulate Mrs. Teralea Moore, Assistant Professor of Mathematics in our Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, who is celebrating her retirement after 20 years of teaching at GWU! Mrs. Moore has put a lot of hard work and care into helping her students succeed during her time at GWU, and the CAS has been blessed to have her on our team. Months of preparation, quick thinking, and teamwork led to a standout showing for the Gardner-Webb Math Jeopardy team at the Southeastern Sectional Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America.

Competing against 26 teams, the group finished second overall, marking the strongest finish in program history and advancing to the Final Four just one question away from the championship.

Junior Timothy Campbell also earned the Walt and Susan Patterson Prize for his conference presentation, highlighting excellence in both competition and scholarship.

A big moment for our students and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Gardner-Webb University.

In the past year, AI has started to significantly change how mathematics is done. Even so, none of the mathematicians that reporter Konstantin Kakaes spoke to fear that the subject will become obsolete.

Terence Tao gave the analogy of mathematicians trying to climb “a big mountain range with lots of tall mountains and lots of foothills.” Humans can only climb one step at a time, but they can plan a route to the top of a mountain like Everest. Meanwhile, Tao said, current AIs are like jumping robots. They can sometimes “parkour their way to the top of a 6-foot wall” that a human couldn’t climb. But they can’t do long-term strategic planning. Those 6 feet might become 10 feet, or 100, Tao imagines, but “the little jumping robots are nowhere near the Mount Everests of math.”
