There is a public hearing on October 28th for a 5-year reauthorization of the Riverhead Charter School. Riverhead is where it all started for charters on Long Island, and now we may very well be on the precipice of vouchers. This hearing is the perfect time and place to make a statement that OUR public dollars belong in OUR public schools!

We are asking for as many people as possible to stand shoulder to shoulder in support of public money remaining with public schools. More details to follow as the date gets closer.

OBMS is running multiple fundraisers throughout the entire month of October to support local women fighting breast cancer. All money will go toward purchasing and assembling Care packages for women fighting breast cancer. These packages will be delivered to the Sloan-Kettering treatment center in Commack and the cancer treatment center at Stony Brook University Hospital. approximately four or more baskets will be raffled on a weekly basis… All baskets have been donated by local businesses, teachers and community members. There are also weekly sales which take place every Friday...... popcorn, cotton, candy, bracelets, chocolate pink ribbon, lollipops, pink lemonade and handmade crafts. all money raised throughout the month of October will go toward our individualized care packages to be delivered to local cancer centers. This past Saturday, 9 CTA members joined the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides walk in Riverhead, and together our local raised over $1,000 for the fight against breast cancer.
Thank you to everyone who walked, and to every member who donated. Showing up on a Saturday morning and giving generously is what our union is about, and it matters to the families and communities this money will help.
If you missed the walk this year, we hope you’ll join us next fall. Proud to stand with our members, and with everyone who has been touched by cancer.
