One of the tricky aspects of AAC implementation is the automatic push for the communicator to use their device. In that process, valuable communication is often treated less important than using the device. Don’t fall for that. Use a total communication approach, and accept all forms of communication. Don’t mistakenly teach your communicator that using their device is more valuable than gestures, signs, and facial expressions. What’s easiest for us, isn’t always what’s meaningful to our communicator.

CVI Awareness Month is coming to an end, but I don’t want this to be the end. I’m hopeful I raised some awareness this month but worried I did not do the CVI community justice. If you’re an AAC SLP or SLP that works with AAC users, I hope this can be more of a beginning for us to learn, grow, and improve our knowledge. If you’re a parent of a child with a suspected CVI, I hope you feel more comfortable knowing there are resources to help you. Did you learn at least one new CVI related concept this month? Two of the most underrated factors I see when it comes to AAC success: using a keyguard and incorporating the AAC Prompt Hierarchy. For whatever reason, modeling without expectations has taken the spotlight. But modeling without expectations alone isn’t setting you up for AAC success. Set yourself up for success by incorporating these two strategies. What are some things you would like to learn more about with the AAC Prompt Hierarchy and keyguards? Just some thoughts lately. Thinking is always a good thing, fighting not so much. While I will draw a hard line between practices that are damaging and destructive (yes, in ways you may not even realize), I think it’s time we reach a hand across the isle, and do this together. Who’s willing to come on this journey with me?
