This post is reactive, but long overdue. I’m tired of other professionals telling me they don’t believe an AAC user is using communication intentionally. I’m tired of professionals that don’t believe an AAC user is capable of using their device. I’m just so tired. And if I’m so tired, how do you think parents of AAC users feel? How do you think the AAC user feels? AAC users with complex access are put to a higher standard of “proving they’re capable.” If you’re a professional working with complex bodies, all I ask is to take a step back and proceed with curiosity. Can you open your mind to possibilities?

Sometimes it’s the simple things that make the most difference. In this scenario, I changed the AAC users background from gray to black, and the impact was amazing. Do you see it? What are some simple tweaks you make that have high-impact? (Side note, see how distracting the glare is? Consider using a matte screen protector, more of this to come soon).

Did I forget to mention I made a FREE back-to-school trialing for SLPs to present to teachers? This year we’re doing a culture reset in our school buildings, and it starts with this training. Take a look at this free 15-minute training with a brief 5-minute intro for SLPs. I gave away some insider tricks that no one tells you (did I go too far 🤔). Use code FREEAAC at checkout. Culture shift starts now.

If you’ve been wondering, here you go (reminder that complex access requires creative solutions).

Holding onto dreams isn’t always a bad thing. Regardless of our perspectives, leave the door open to possibilities.

In my quest to use real photos for my clients page set, I stumbled upon pictures of him as a young boy, smiling and looking at the camera. If I could travel back in time, I’d introduce AAC to my adult client when he was just a smiling little boy in his wheelchair. Young kids have the physical energy and posture to build communication skills. Don’t wait until adulthood. Start early, while they have the strength.
