✨ One student left a note on a final exam that Dr. Nirthieca Suthakaran will never forget.

They shared that while facing personal loss and challenges no one could see, her class gave them something to look forward to each week—a reason to smile.

Today, Dr. Suthakaran is a two-time Florida Atlantic University graduate, educator, mentor, and Department Chair, helping students find their own paths in healthcare and science. Her story is a powerful reminder that the impact of a great teacher often extends far beyond the classroom.

💙 From MedOwl student to inspiring the next generation, her journey is one of mentorship, community, and paying it forward.

🚨 What is Cychlorphine? A new synthetic opioid, reportedly 10 times more potent than fentanyl, is emerging in the drug supply.

Our Dean and medical toxicologist, Lewis Nelson, MD, sat down with Medscape Emergency Medicine to break down what clinicians and public health leaders need to know about this rising threat.

🔑 Key Takeaways:

The Symptoms are Identical: Cychlorphine causes the same dangerous respiratory depression as other opioids.

Naloxone Still Works: Reversal failure is usually a matter of dose or delayed response, not drug resistance. Naloxone remains the gold standard.

Harm Reduction is Key: With the drug supply constantly shifting, strategies like never using alone and keeping naloxone on hand are vital to saving lives.

While recent data shows national opioid mortality is dropping, the rise of new compounds like cychlorphine means vigilance and education are more important than ever.
