Showing up where the profession’s future is being shaped. đŸ€

Florida Atlantic University’s Phyllis & Harvey Sandler School of Social Work proudly attended the National Association of Social Workers Conference in Orlando as Platinum Sponsors, represented by Associate Director of Operations and Community Engagement Danile Jerome and Professor and Interim MSW Coordinator Dr. Lea DeRigne.

The conference brought together passionate leaders from across the field to inspire action, strengthen connections, and champion critical issues like workforce sustainability and mental health equity. Together, they’re reinforcing a shared vision for a stronger, more resilient future in social work.

There are moments in higher education that remind us why the work matters. This was one of them.

Florida Atlantic University’s College of Social Work and Criminal Justice recently celebrated its inaugural class of graduating Dean’s Leadership Academy Vanguards, honoring the journeys that brought them to the CSWCJ, along with the leadership skills that they’ll carry into the communities they serve.

The Dean’s Leadership Academy transitions leadership from theory to lived experience, pairing academic rigor with real opportunities to mentor others and engage with industry leaders, community partners, and policymakers. Walking alongside this inaugural cohort has meant watching their purposes awaken, their confidence deepen, and their leadership emerge.

Congratulations to our first Vanguards. As we learned at the ceremony, this is ‘The Threshold to Greater Things!’ 🩉

Before Kirk Brown was a CEO, a keynote speaker, or a Distinguished Alumnus, he was a kid who almost walked away from his own future. Today, he leads an organization that prevents more than 1,200 foster youth from facing such moments alone.

We are honored to celebrate Kirk as our 2026 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and are inspired by his work. 🩉

Dr. Allan Barsky recently represented Florida Atlantic University Social Work in Taipei, Taiwan. 🌏

On May 13, he delivered a keynote at the “Wellbeing of Children in a Digital Age” symposium, hosted by the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF). His talk explored how different countries use legal and regulatory approaches to protect children’s wellbeing in an era of AI, social media, and emerging technology — moving the conversation beyond simply banning social media toward evidence-informed policy, prevention, and digital literacy.

The next day, he led a seminar on ethics in international social work at National Taiwan Normal University, bringing together students from Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, and Finland for a cross-cultural conversation grounded in dignity, cultural humility, social justice, and human rights.

We are proud to see our faculty leading these conversations worldwide.

Florida Atlantic University College of Social Work and Criminal Justice’s forensic labs are no ordinary classroom.

Patrick McLaughlin, Forensic Science Instructor and 20+ year NYPD and CSI veteran, recently hosted Dr. Ronald Gazze, Executive Medical Director at NextEra Energy, for a one of a kind, hands on forensic experience as part of his winning bid at the Florida Atlantic University President’s SoirĂ©e 65.

From fingerprint and blood spatter analysis to microscopy with live image capture and footprint evidence collection, Dr. Gazze stepped into the role of crime scene investigator and got an insider look at how science helps solve crimes, one clue at a time.

This is what it looks like when real world experience meets world class education. 🩉

Three new CCJ courses have just been unveiled, and the people teaching them are not your typical professors. You’ll learn from a sitting circuit court judge, a researcher who studies policing and immigration up close, and a chief assistant public defender who walks into courtrooms every day.

This is the stuff you can’t get from a textbook.

Seats fill fast, so claim yours early. Email [email protected] or check fau.edu/sw-cj/sccj for details.
