This post is about the importance of letting our kids explore music freely.

As parents we want the best for our children and we also expect the best from them. We set high standards, compare them, what they have, how easy they have everything to our sometimes hard or humble childhood.

When kids learn to draw or paint we offer them a box of crayons. Sometimes we give them a coloring book and the moment we present a pre-made drawing they will “fail” if they paint outside of the black lines.

Let’s change our approach to playing music. Let’s give them a box of crayons, a piano full of keys, and have them explore sounds and combinations.

I understand it’s not easy for a parent without the proper knowledge or training and that’s where a piano teacher at a young age is the perfect guidance to foster their love for music without frustrating them.

In my piano lessons kids are expected to be engaged and if they are not it’s not their fault, it’s mine! I’ll present them with activities. Some kids like to be challenged and I’ll compete against them. Others want to see me play or play along. Everything is ok as long as they are actively watching me play.

In this video you can see my youngest son. He loves to watch me play and he already understands we use different fingers in different keys, plays the notes sequentially, understands the different between pleasant sound combinations and not so pleasant (jazzy) ones haha.
