There are lots of ways to hit your driver farther and certainly working to get your club head speed up is a worthwhile pursuit for most…
But many people I work with are looking for more distance with a bit less effort.
Like how can you hit the ball farther without feeling like you have to swing any harder?
Here are 3 keys to help max out that distance without more effort
1. Tilt at setup
This comes from your right shoulder getting closer to your right hip. Put your hands on your quads at setup…ride the trail hand down just above top of knee cap…that’s about the right amount.
2. Press into trail foot and feel like you’re tossing the club away from the target to start the swing.
This helps shift your pressure early and get good width. The key here is the trail arm stays pretty wide and there isn’t a ton of early hinge.
This all helps create a reaction in transition and downswing that will give you more speed “for free”
3. Head back through impact
This will help with your angle of attack….hitting more level or up on the ball will help max out your distance relative to your speed.
Lots of the best drivers of the ball will have the head actually working back away from the target a few inches through impact. It can release up and forward into the follow through but from about left arm parallel in the downswing until arms parallel in the follow through (1/2 way down to 1/2 way through) your head should stay where it is or even work back a little.
So the mantra here is
1. Tilt
2. Press and toss
3. Head back
If you have any other glaring swing issues causing big contact or direction control issues of course you have to fix those as well but these pieces will help with more distance without more effort or force pretty much regardless of where you’re at.
Hope this helps👊🏽

I am absolutely honored to announce that I’ll be the new co host of School Of Golf along side the wonderful Blair O’Neal .
Martin, Blair and the entire team at GolfPass have built an incredible brand around School Of Golf and I’m excited to get the chance to continue that legacy in the years to come.
Martin Hall has been such an awesome influence on not only myself, but thousands of other golf coaches and millions of golfers.
He decided to retire from the show this past season after 15 years and over 400 episodes. Absolutely incredible. He leaves shoes that of course I will not be able to fill, but I’m humbled that he gave me his blessing to continue what he has built.
When I was a younger coach I would make sure to never miss an episode of School Of Golf each week…I’d always rush home to watch the new episode so I could try whatever Martin was talking about on myself and test on the lesson tee the next day :) He has always been the BEST at finding new and creative ways to get his great coaching messages across to the masses of golfers he was helping. I’m going to do my best to do the same.
Thank you to Martin, Blair and everyone at Golf Pass for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.
Thank you to my partner Mary Lengle for making this all possible and 10 wonderful years of videos together to prepare me for this moment.
Thank you to everyone on the Cogorno Golf Team for making this possible and thank you to you all for all of the support, for watching the videos and helping me become a better coach. I wouldn’t be here without you and I appreciate each and every one of you 💙
A new season of School Of Golf will be coming this fall and I can’t wait for you to see it!
Getting your trail shoulder to work DOWN and FORWARD is a big key during your downswing.
Getting it down enough is key to keep your body’s inclination to the ground. Think right shoulder lower on your way through the ball.
This makes consistent contact easier to attain.
The more your trail shoulder is down the closer your body is to the ground the more you are able to keep your trail arm and trail wrist bent at impact.
This allows you to get the hands forward and lower the dynamic loft. That’s how you really compress the ball…you know that feeling you get when you you hit it so good it feels like you didn’t even hit it?
That’s that.
The forward part is key to get the low point forward. Again for solid contact.
Is also plays a role in keeping your club path neutral.
The more back your shoulder stays that that help keep the path from inside but the risk there is the low point being too far back.
That would lead to some fats and thins contact wise and some pushes/hooks in terms of direction.
The trail shoulder goes down and forward and also OUT some (toward ball line)
This one you have to watch
Too far out and the path gets too over the top
Not far enough out you get the issues i mentioned above with it staying too far back
So down and forward…..and only a little out :)
If you hit pushes and hooks then feeling it more out can be OK
If you hit pulls and fades than feeling less out can be OK
Either way the shoulder needs to go down and forward and I like this one as a simple way to feel that
When you look down in POV you should see the club head getting right behind the ball
That’s the appropriate amount of down and forward
You feel this immediately to start the downswing and all the way through impact
Hope this helps ya 🤙🏽
