Welp! Last week did not turn out the way that I expected it would. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we dealt with illness and all the necessary schedule changes that came with it. As the sole employee of Rhythm Roots Music Studio, it is sometimes so difficult to make that call because I know that continuity and consistency matters. But the health and wellbeing of your family is always my priority.

There are LOTS of schedule changes this week! Note: Party Barn is on THURSDAY instead of our regular Tuesday time.

NEXT week we’ll return to our NORMAL schedule.

I am so sorry to have to do this, but lasses are cancelled tomorrow, 10/2 due to illness. I have reached out to all families that were registered and will be touching base in the morning regarding rescheduling/refunds.

BUT, if we are feeling well enough, I may do a free virtual class both on Instagram live and Zoom at 11AM tomorrow. If that is something you’re interested in and Zoom would be a better option for you, send me a DM and I’ll get you our private link. I’ll make decisions by 9AM and will post an update in my stories.

I’m going to miss everyone so much and I’m so sorry for any inconvenience. I hope you have a wonderful Friday!

Just a lil update before classes tomorrow 🎶

We’re at Studio Bloom in West Columbia. And just a reminder to only park on the right side of the lot OR across the street in the field next to Moseley’s Funeral Home.

🎹9:30-Sensory-Friendly Rhythm & Rhyme (closing registration tonight at 8PM)
Our sensory friendly version of the super popular Rhythm & Rhyme class has all the same elements as the original class, but we keep things calmer, quieter, and gentler. All families and all abilities are welcome to attend. If there are any accommodations we can provide, please let us know and we will do our best to create a space that is as inclusive as possible. Classes are capped at 6 children.

🎹10:30-Rhythm & Rhyme (1 space left)
The goal of Rhythm & Rhyme is to immerse children in music through listening, movement, singing, instruments and play and to begin building their music “vocabulary.” This class is a fun, engaging community of music.

🎹11:30-Little Lullabies (only a few spaces remain)
Designed just for babies and their caregiver, this first music class is helping to expose and immerse babies in music to help build their musical “vocabulary.” Wondering what a baby could possibly learn in music class? Sign up and find out!

This month we have been doing a ton of farm-themed activities to go along with our book, Driving My Tractor. But I didn’t choose these activities just because they fit the farm theme. There is also SO much happening for your little one’s development.

Socially, fingerplays are a great way for you to interact with your child. This one in particular is great because it is very hands on and offers an opportunity not just for tickles, but for kisses and nibbles as well. If you choose to do this one with your baby, you can lay them on their back and demonstrate emotion by using big facial expressions and movements.

Most finger plays are also rhymes! And rhymes help so much with early language development. Among other things, they help babies to recognize the natural rhythm of our language (which is a scaffold for being able to break words down into their most basic sounds later).

And most importantly, finger plays help children to gain an early understanding of patterns in music. “Chicken in the Barnyard” is a chant that has four pulses per phrase (AKA “common time” because a lot of familiar music has four pulses per phrase). It also sets up rhythmic anticipation. When we wait for that last “gobble, gobble, gobble,” we are teaching babies to recognize that the phrase isn’t over!

What else can you do with this finger play?
🐔Play around with speed! Do it fast, do it slow!
🐔Wait different amounts of time before saying “gobble” at the end! Make them anticipate what is going to happen next
🐔Bounce them or pat along to the beat instead of doing the actual finger play. Help them physically feel the beat in their body.
🐔Play around with subbing different animals and animal sounds in (for older kids, you could mix up the sounds and see if they notice!)
🐔For older kids, make them say the last word of each phrase
🐔Sit across from your bigger kid and let them do the whole rhyme by themselves

There is so much to be done with even the simplest songs. How else would YOU use “Chicken in the Barnyard?”

We had a HUGE week last week here at Rhythm Roots Music Studio! Not only did we hold our regular classes, but we also hosted two mom group get togethers, had our first weekly Little Lullabies class, hung out and jammed to Dolly tunes at Sip & Strum, and had the SWEETEST Saturday morning at Party Barn. This week’s schedule is MUCH lighter as we head toward the end of the month, but there are still plenty of opportunities to make music with us.

⭐NEW⭐11:30AM Little Lullabies—for ages 0-12(ish) months, a slow, gentle first music class experience for babies and their grown-up

What a joyful week this week. I was so busy and didn’t get to share all the highlight photos your sent my way. So here’s a little recap.
