LTV Day 2 • 2PM

Film screening of Merlin’s Isle: The Tale This Land Still Keeps

Malcolm Guite partnered with Stephen Crotts and Rabbit Room to create a gorgeous short film about the making of his epic poetry, the responsibility he feels to “take up the tale” and how the real places in his real life helped him to mold the story from the beginning.

The count down to Lifting the Veil is officially on! We can’t wait to see you there!

To continue our trek through the Lifting the Veil schedule, we reach the final discussion before our Saturday afternoon lunch break. Get ready to be enchanted and inspired by a conversation between Malcolm Guite and the Common Good Magazine team about how being a bi-vocational poet *and* priest has actually enriched both of Malcolm’s callings instead of diminished them.

If you’re an artist with a call to ministry, this is for you. If you’re a creative person with a day job, this is for you. If you’re a fan of the thoughtful, creative works of both Malcolm and the Common Good Magazine team, this is for you!

We can’t wait to see you at Lifting the Veil on October 23-24! There are still a few tickets available at the link in comments!

It’s here!

The launch of edition three AND the debut of our very own hand drawn logo!!

Everybody give your most enthusiastic thanks and compliments to in the comments for his astounding work. And then give .eichman her flowers for taking the photo that first inspired the design.

There are a few things about this logo that make it special, besides the hands and minds that made it happen. The typewriter was added last minute because it means a lot to several of our team members. It’s the writer’s tool. It’s real and noisy and something about it in today’s world feels nostalgic and rebellious in all the good ways. It’s a sword in the hands of our artists.

The deer is so special because it roots us in the backwoods where HopeWords was born. It also mirrors our own anxieties and short comings while reminding us that we can use even our shaky legs and fluttery hearts to make beautiful things.

But, as our flower farming cofounder has repeatedly pointed out, deer are also very mischievous. You might call them rascals. They show up where they’re not invited and wreak havoc for the sake of fruit and flowers they’ll call their own. We aspire to be deer.

The meaning of the smaller details will stay between our team, but I think, if you really look, they’ll mean something to you to. That’s how good, human art works, I do believe.

One more big thanks to Jerry and Cheryl for being our eyes before we could see.

We’re also giving a huge high five to our writers and artists for making this one of the greatest editions we may ever have.

Over the next several weeks, between our Lifting the Veil posts, we’ll be sharing more about specific pieces and artists from this edition, but for now we wanted to give our new logo the shine it deserves.

We’ll see you in edition 3! (Link in comments!)

We never go into a journal edition with a set theme in mind. It could be because I’ve seen how HopeWords works and the ways its music sort of falls together in melodies and harmonies that perfectly fit together.

As I’m finishing up the edit, I think the message of our fall issue is simple: b r e a t h e.

Our pieces this issue are slow and thoughtful. It’s like a hot coffee: great, when taken in slowly.

So, I think, this edition asks one thing of you: to breathe. Notice. Sit still and listen to the music your friends wrote as a response to the song they heard in their own life.

If you haven’t yet subscribed, I encourage you to do so at the link in our bio. You’ll get newsletters and other fun gifts with your subscription fee, not to mention the joy of supporting an indie publication and the artists who make it breathe.

I can’t wait to see you there.

Third on our 10/24 agenda is a discussion between poet Malcolm Guite and painter Bruce Herman where they’ll dive into the making of ordinary saints, in hopes to invite you to collaborate with your gifted friends and make something even more special than you could ever create alone. Lifting the Veil is becoming a can’t miss weekend in beautiful Boston and we can’t wait to see you there!
