On Wednesday April 22, the following BU CRJ students received awards at the 2025-26 Honors Convocation: Outstanding CRJ Graduates Jessica Aristy and Heather Kemp, Excellence in Law Enforcement Studies Noah Burtner and Courtney Frame, Excellence in Legal Studies Chessie Tindall, and the Walls-Farmer Scholarship Recipient Weldon Moffett. Lucy Nicely is a 2026 Senior in Bluefield University’s School of Criminal Justice and was interviewed about his internship from this semester:

1.) Where did you complete your internship at?

Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office

2.) What was your favorite thing you got to experience?

My favorite thing I got from my experience in my internship at Tazewell County Sheriffs office was sitting in the 911 communication center. Being able to see the behind the scenes of how operators respond and react to an emergency was very moving and educational.

3.) Would you do it again and/or recommend another classmate to participate?

I would most definitely do it again to be able to experience the ability to see and learn how things work inside the sheriff's office. I would also recommend another classmate to take part to be able to get this great learning experience as well.

4. Could you see yourself working at a sheriff's office or another law-enforcement office in the future?

I most definitely see myself working in a law-enforcement in the future for my career. I am hoping to do something like CSI or crime analysis. These jobs will be hands-on, and this internship helped open my eyes to what I might expect in a future law-enforcement based job.

Connor Theal is a 2026 Senior in Bluefield University’s School of Criminal Justice and was interviewed about his internship from last semester:

1.) Where did you complete your internship at?

Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office

2.) What was your favorite thing you got to experience?
I would say having hands on experience allowed me to see how things operate inside the field. I had cool experiences and got to learn from others of experience.

3.) Would you do it again and/or recommend another classmate to participate?
Yes I would do it again, I genuinely learned and made good relationships. If you are a student going into that field I definitely would recommend especially if you are a visual learner.

4. Could you see yourself working at a sheriff's office or another law-enforcement office in the future?
Yeah I plan to pursue a career in law enforcement and this internship essentially verified how I felt towards it. It is a good way to test the waters and get a real sense of what things could look like.

Noah Burtner is a 2026 Senior in Bluefield University’s School of Criminal Justice and was interviewed about his internship from last semester:

1.) Where did you complete your internship at?

Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office

2.) What was your favorite thing you got to experience?

My favorite experience from this internship was the ride along hours or the hours spent in the detective division. It was awesome to see how these officers go about their day and all the different challenges involved.

3.) Would you do it again and/or recommend another classmate to participate?

I would highly recommend this internship to anyone that is looking to continue in law enforcement. I honestly couldn’t recommend a better place to not only get hours but a place to learn, grow, and strive towards the next step in your career.

4. Could you see yourself working at a sheriff's office or another law-enforcement office in the future?

I could most definitely in the future see myself working in some type of law enforcement. I would love to do something like Customs and Border Protection. This is a job where you always must be on your toes and never know what is coming through on a day-to-day basis.
