🎛️ One Production Decision // Episode 19

Leaving space isn't a problem.

As producers, it's easy to look at an empty spot in a track and think, “Something needs to go there.”

But sometimes that space is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

A little silence can make the next hit feel bigger.
A gap can give a lyric room to breathe.
Pulling everything back can give the listener a moment to think, feel, or simply reset.

Space creates contrast.

You don't have to fill every second of a song to keep someone engaged. Sometimes the most powerful production decision is knowing when to do less.

Still smiling about last night. ❤️

Jillian Riscoe, her band, a room full of great people, and a whole lot of music made for a pretty special night at GFM.

The music was incredible, and so was everything happening around it. People meeting each other, conversations starting, new connections being made, and everyone simply sharing the night together. The music, the people, the room, the little moments in between…

That's what we're hoping to build with Live at GFM.

These photos are just a little taste of what happened last night. We've got a lot more to share. 🎶

Gated reverb on a folk vocal?!

Yep. 😂

In this one, we use gated reverb to add some character and space to a folk vocal without letting the reverb hang around and wash out the performance.

Sometimes an effect doesn't need to be obvious to make a difference.

A little character, a little movement, and just enough space to help the vocal live in the track.

Which guitar is louder?

Lead or rhythm?

Trick question. They're the same.

This is a great reminder that making an element feel more prominent doesn't necessarily mean making it louder.

You can change the tone, frequency balance, density, width, dynamics, or arrangement and completely change how an instrument is perceived, without pushing the fader up.

As producers, we're constantly shaping what the listener notices.

So before you reach for the volume k**b, ask yourself:

Does it actually need to be louder… or does it just need to sound different?

Louder isn't always better.

Sometimes it's just better shaping.

This is what a night at Live at GFM looks like.

Not a huge venue.
Not a room full of strangers staring at a stage.

Just great music, a small room, an artist you can actually connect with, and a group of people who came because they love music.

We've captured some pretty special moments in this room over the last few shows, and this Thursday, Jillian Riscoe is bringing her FULL BAND to make this one a little different.
