Be an Attendance H.E.R.O.! 🦸♀️
Here.
Everyday.
Ready to learn.
On-time.⏰️
😀September is National Attendance Awareness Month!‼️
As we step into September, a month dedicated to highlighting the importance of consistent attendance, we at Oak Grove Primary 🧡🖤 are excited to challenge every student to become an Attendance Super H.E.R.O.!🦸♂️ This initiative reminds our families that every school day counts, and being present is crucial for success.
Understanding Chronic Absenteeism:
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of school days - which is about two days each month—due to any reason, whether excused or unexcused. Since the pandemic, many schools across the Midwest have seen chronic absenteeism rates more than double. What may seem like minor absences can add up quickly. By senior year, missing just two days a month can lead to missing an entire school year!‼️ Each day away from school translates to lost opportunities for learning, personal growth, and connection. Education is a journey where today's lessons build upon yesterday's knowledge. When students miss class, they risk falling behind, not only on that day’s material but also on future concepts.
The Benefits of Regular Attendance:
Research from Attendance Works demonstrates that students who regularly attend school are more likely to excel in reading and math, achieve higher test scores, and graduate on time. Consistent attendance also fosters social connections, helping students build relationships with peers and teachers. This sense of belonging enhances their overall school experience and encourages them to engage fully in school life.
How Families Can Support Attendance
Achieving consistent attendance is a team effort. We encourage families to:
Establish Consistent Routines: Set a regular bedtime 🛌 and morning routine🌞 to help your child start the day right. A good night's sleep and a calm morning can make all the difference. Consider having your child arrive at 8:15 to enjoy a school breakfast.🥣
Plan Ahead: Schedule medical appointments 🩺 and family trips🏖 outside of school hours or during breaks to minimize missed classroom time. If your child needs to be away for an extended period, contact the school about your options.
Stay Engaged: Check in with your child about their school experiences and maintain communication with their teachers or counselors. This can help identify any challenges that may affect their willingness to attend school.
Emphasize the Importance of Attendance: Discuss with your children why attending school each day is vital. Help them recognize that school not only teaches academic skills but also fosters essential life skills like responsibility, determination, and hard work.
Reach Out for Help: If you encounter challenges in getting your child to school, please inform your child's counselor, teacher, or principal. There may be resources available to assist you.
While unforeseen events or illnesses🤢 may arise, we understand that not all absences can be avoided. However, through our collective efforts, understanding, and proactive planning, we can significantly reduce them. We look forward to collaborating with our staff, families, and community to ensure all our students can become Attendance H.E.R.O.s! 🦸♀️🦸♂️
