The Bigfoot Trail Alliance has announced the Klamath Mountains Workforce Training Network (KMWTN), a new place-based initiative designed to connect young people with conservation careers while strengthening stewardship of the Klamath Mountains and ancestral landscapes. Developed in partnership with nonprofit, Tribal, and educational organizations, the program provides youth ages 15–24 from Humboldt, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties with paid mentorship, hands-on field experience, technical training, and professional certifications.

Supported by the Klamath River Fund at the Humboldt Area Foundation and the Wild Rivers Community Foundation, the KMWTN focuses on creating meaningful opportunities for rural and Indigenous youth in communities where career opportunities can be limited, but the need for ecological restoration and land stewardship is significant. Participants in the 2026–2027 cohort will take part in three immersive learning experiences covering salmonid monitoring and watershed restoration, GIS or Wilderness First Aid certification, and ecological fieldwork and outdoor leadership.

The program provides transportation, equipment, meals, and stipends to ensure participants can fully participate without financial barriers. No previous experience is required, and Tribal youth who commit to all three workshops will receive priority access. Training will be led by experienced professionals from Bigfoot Trail Alliance, Ascend Wilderness Experience, Salmon River Restoration Council, Scott River Watershed Council, The Watershed Research and Training Center, Trinity Together, and the Trinity County Resource Conservation District.

The KMWTN represents more than workforce development; it is an investment in young people, healthy ecosystems, cultural connection, and the long-term resilience of communities throughout the Klamath Mountains. Applications for the competitive 2026–2027 cohort must be received by September 25, 2026.

Earlier this week our NACTEP Youth Program Services Coordinator Lisa K. Hoffman visited our friends over at Blue Lake School with the KidSpark Curriculum. It was great to reconnect with the students again, as well as having a pleasant surprise. Jack remembered Miss Lisa from his previous school, so when she came in Jack told the new students that "the cool robot lady is nice" and asked her if he could show off his skills. In no time battle bots were created and plans were drawn out for the next round. Lisa will be visiting the school on a bimonthly basis and we'll keep you posted on the new and exciting builds!

CSAC, Annual Statewide Financial Aid Workshops

Registrations for the 2026-2027 Statewide Financial Aid Workshop are filling up fast!

These free, half-day workshops are offered in partnership with the California Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CASFAA) and the California Community Colleges Student Financial Aid Administrators Association (CCCSFAAA).

NEW: Special Event Workshops

This year, two workshops will feature a short press conference immediately preceding the workshop:
• September 1, 2026 — American River College, Sacramento
• September 30, 2026 — Allan Hancock College, Santa Maria
Each press conference will feature CSAC Executive Director Dr. Daisy Gonzales and other special guest speakers providing updates and insights about the current state of financial aid in California. Both the press conferences and workshops are free and open to the public. Space is limited, so register today!

Who: High school counselors, student advisors, student advocacy groups, Cal-SOAP success coaches, outreach specialists, and community-based education partners

Where: In person at 50+ locations throughout California, plus virtual workshops via Zoom

Under the NACTEP grant with the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribal Educational Agency, we provide all training online and in person at your school, pay the exam fee, provide transportation, lodging and meals to take the test this November! Drone pilots are in high demand these days, from working with CalTrans, Fire Departments, as well in creative and artistic endeavors such as videos for special events!

Earlier this month the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribal Educational Agency hosted the "Soaring to Success" conference, celebrating the achievements of our Interns throughout the year and participants in our Summer Jump Start Program at Eureka High School. Our Summer program helped Middle and High school students get a boost academically for the upcoming school year, as well as creating meaninful and lasting friendships and partnerships.

Our NACTEP Youth Program Services Coordinator Lisa K. Hoffman had a Drone club booth, where students can learn about getting their FAA Part 107 license, start a Drone club at their school, and were able to take apart and put back together a drone! During the conference students were able to collect raffle tickets with engagement and participation in various activites. The raffle prizes were amazing and we would like to thank our partners to make this happen!

This past Summer during our Summer Jump Start program, Lisa K. Hoffman, our NACTEP Youth and Program Services Coordinator worked with Middle and High School students with the KidSpark Curriculum. Kidspark is similar to building blocks like Legos but with a twist! There are parts that can be motorized and coded, and the Curriculum aligns with National and State Science Standards.

In this age filled with screen time and limited hands-on experiences, Lisa intended to give the students a design challenge whereas they were to build a bridge inbetween two tables. There were no exact or formal instructions given, so they experienced cause in effect in real time, discuss hypotheses as to how and why the design would work while lending creativity and inspiration. Unexpectedly a chambered nautilus showed up in building experiment-what was it for and where did it come from? The student replied, "It's a shell for the fishes to hide under when cars go over the bridge."

We are so grateful to have the experience with our students! Come back to our site soon for more updates of our incredible Summer!
