Northeast State Engineering Design students built and donated a second SPICA chair to help children recovering from hip dysplasia surgery.

On Monday, students donated the device to Niswonger Children's Hospital, where it will be used to help families as their little ones heal.

The specialized chair accommodates the size and position of a SPICA cast, which is used post-surgery to immobilize the hips and pelvis during healing.

It features a surrounding table for eating, playing and other activities.

Students built the chair under the guidance of Engineering Design instructor Daniel Arnett, giving them an opportunity to apply their skills beyond the classroom and create a device that meets a need for families in our community.

Local artist Leigh Ann Agee added the finishing touches to the device, using bright colors and playful animals to create a welcoming design for its young users.

Held in Northeast State's Technical Education Complex, the event gave prospective students, families, and community members an opportunity to explore our Technologies Division programs, participate in hands-on activities, and learn more about careers in today's high-demand technical fields.

We appreciate our faculty, staff and student volunteers for helping to make the event possible, and we thank everyone who took the time to visit and learn more about Northeast State.
