As we conclude our WWII unit, we had the privilege of hosting Sandy Tsukiyama from Hawaii via Zoom. Sandy, a retired secondary teacher, shared her mother's experiences as a teenager during the Japanese Internment.
Sandy's mother documented stories of those around her while living in the camps. Her father volunteered, along with thousands of other young men of Japanese ancestry, including Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, to prove their loyalty and defend our country in the all-Japanese 442nd Regimental Combat Team — the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.
We extend our gratitude to Mrs. Murphy for organizing the event, Mr. Burrell for hosting us in the library, and our Social Studies department for inviting other students enrolled in American Cultures to join us. This was an unforgettable opportunity to connect our learning to real lived experiences.
