Early Learning at Washburn

Early Learning at Washburn Bloomington Public Schools Early Learning at Washburn serves children from birth to 5 years and their families through a variety of classes and events.

Early Learning at Washburn serves children from birth to 5 years and their families. Early Learning offers a variety of programs and services within Bloomington Public Schools. The program's mission is to strengthen families through quality education and support in parenting and parent-child relationships. In early learning, we focus on both parents and kids and know that a parent is a child's fir

st and most important teacher. Quality educational childcare is provided on site for a small fee for siblings not enrolled in classes. Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes help parents meet the challenges of parenting and help young children (birth to 5 years) develop socially, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. ECFE classes are offered weekly at two sites during mornings, afternoons and evenings. ECFE is a public school program staffed by licensed parent and early childhood educators. ECFE operates on a sliding fee scale; no one is turned away for inability to pay. Early Learning preschool helps children develop learning readiness skills so they will have the confidence, independence, and social abilities to become successful learners. Preschool classrooms and activities are designed to provide a variety of fun and meaningful hands-on learning experiences and staff members pay close attention to meeting children's individual and developing needs. All teachers are licensed in early childhood family education or early childhood special education. Parent involvement is an important part of our preschool programs. Early Learning offers unique preschool programs for both three- and four-year-olds. Early Learning conducts screenings for children in Bloomington which help identify children who may benefit from early childhood services before they enter school and connects them with the appropriate resources and programs. The state of Minnesota requires that all children be screened before they enter kindergarten. This screening should be done by the time your child turns four years old. If you have a concern about your child's development before the age of three, Early Learning will perform specially requested screenings.

From tiny caterpillars to beautiful butterflies! Over the past month, some of our Pre-K classrooms have had front-row seats to the magic of nature.

Our friends loved watching the life cycle happen right before their eyes—talk about an amazing hands-on learning experience!

Lily and Mabel, our licensed therapy dogs, have been taking turns visiting our preschool classrooms this year!

More than just furry friends, they are wonderful teachers. Their visits help our students practice being kind, gentle, and caring friends. Interacting with them is also a fantastic way for the children to experience new things and build self-regulation skills.

Our favorite classroom reminder when they visit? "Calm voice, calm body, so the dogs know you are safe!"

May is Think CS (Computer Science) Month in Bloomington.

The preschoolers used their superpowers—computational thinking skills—to become Micro:Rockstars! We worked with micro:bits, which are tiny but powerful computers. By writing code, we taught our micro:bits exactly which musical notes to play. By turning a simple piece of paper into a guitar and coding a tiny computer into a real instrument, we created something amazing!

Reminder: Thursday, May 21st is our End-of-the-Year Picnic that will take place at ELWB from 5:00–7:00 PM. This free event is open to all ELWB families, including ECFE, Birth–3, and Preschool families.

Parent Advisory is planning a fun evening with music from kids' musicians (Todd 'n Tina), food trucks with food for purchase (Brick Oven Pizza and Eggroll Queen), snacks, bubbles, and more! We will also have a photo station where students can take pictures with their teachers as part of our end-of-the-year celebrations.

Last week, Rosie the Rabbit returned for a visit, bringing along her friend, Max the Mighty Tortoise.

We had a wonderful time reading The Tortoise and the Hare together and cheering loudly for our favorite racers! Afterward, everyone had the chance to pet our animal guests.

We even discovered some fun facts: Rosie actually prefers bananas over carrots, and Max’s favorite treat is a fresh dandelion top.
