Meet three of our para-professionals who do the job called, Preventionists. Ms. Delong, Mrs. Thunberg, and Mrs. Pierce work with students from all of our classrooms in small groups, on an individual basis, and sometimes they may even work as the guest teacher in the classroom. They 👏🏼 do 👏🏼 it 👏🏼all 👏🏼 and we love them! What a great team we have. We are so lucky. Go lions! 🦁❤️😊

Hey 🦁 Lions! Do you remember the all-school reading of Flora and Ulysses we did way back when? If you have Disney+ the movie will be streaming beginning this Friday!

In 2012, the year before Flora and Ulysses was published, a friend and I were driving from Austin to Houston when suddenly a giant squirrel appeared on the side of the road. Squirrels had loomed large in my imagination for so long that I almost thought what I was seeing wasn’t real.
But there he was: a giant squirrel.
We turned around, of course.
I got my picture taken with him, of course.
It was a miraculous, unexpected, hilarious gift--encountering that giant squirrel.
In the same way, the movie adaptation of Flora and Ulysses (streaming on Disney+, starting this Friday) is a miraculous, unexpected, hilarious gift.
I love this movie so much.
I can’t wait to see it again.

Kate DiCamillo is one of our favorite authors!
🦁 ❤️ 📚

This morning I woke up thinking about a fifth-grade boy who came through a signing line at a bookstore in North Carolina.
I signed his copy of Despereaux and he said, “My teacher said fifth grade is the year of asking questions.”
“Really?” I said.
“Yeah,” he said. He took out a notebook. “Every day we’re supposed to ask someone different a good question and listen really good and then write down the answer when they’re done talking.”
“Oh,” I said, “I get it. I’m someone different. Okay, what’s your question?”
“My question is how do you get all that hope into your stories?”
“That’s not a good question,” I said. “That’s a great question. Let me think. Um. I guess that writing the story is an act of hope, and so even when I don’t feel hopeful, writing the story can lead me to hope. Does that make sense?”
“Yeah,” he said. He looked me in the eye. “It’s kind of a long answer. But I can write it all out. Thanks.”
He picked up his copy of Despereaux, and walked away—writing in his notebook.
This was years ago.
Why did I wake up this morning and think of this child?
Maybe because this is a time to start asking good questions, a time to write down the answers, a time to listen to each other really well.
I’m going to get myself a little spiral bound notebook.
I’m going to listen and hope.

So proud of these Lakeview Lions for being exceptional community members. Community is one of CORE values and these students decided to pool together their own CORE cash to purchase something for a classmate who’s been absent and will be moving soon! Way to go Lions! ❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 #kindnessrocks

Lakeview Elementary, Home of the Learning LIONS!

In the fall of 1976, Lakeview Elementary opened its doors to children living in the rural country area south of Bloomington. Lakeview students came from four small schools around the lake: Harrodsburg, Smithville, Kirksville, and Sanders. Lakeview sits on 63 acres close to Lake Monroe. This property has a stream, farmland, nature trail, and even a waterfall that lend to many outdoor education opportunities. Lakeview Elementary is known for its warm and friendly atmosphere where all members of the school community, including students, families, teachers, staff, community members, and neighbors are viewed as part of the Lakeview family. The Lakeview team is made up of over 50 incredible people with over 30 certified teachers and 20 support staff.. The team’s mixture of teachers with many years of experience, teachers who are early in their career, teachers new to Bloomington, and teachers who were once a Lakeview Lion themselves, creates a very energetic and positive team that is focused on the learning and success of our students.

Lakeview maintains a preschool through 6th grade student population of approximately 500 students. Our Ready, Set, Grow Pre-K program serves approximately 20 four and five year olds. Many of our preschool students transition into a Lakeview kindergarten classroom at the start of each school year. Students at Lakeview Elementary are taught the district approved curriculum through researched-based approaches. A balance of small group, individual, partner, group and whole class instruction takes place across all grade levels, and in all subject areas. Grade levels consistently partner together for a weekly study buddies time where an intermediate and a primary grade join together for learning. Our teachers use mini-lessons with explicit instruction, play/game-based learning, hands-on learning activities, strategy-based instruction, student inquiry, project-based learning units, and student choice in reading and writing.

Music brings our Lakeview Lions and school community together on several occasions throughout the year. One of the longest and most popular Lakeview traditions is the Variety Show. The Variety show showcases the talents of our Lakeview students in the spring of each school year. The show first began as a lip-syncing competition only, yet over the years, the show has morphed into one of the greatest variety talent shows in Monroe County. In addition to the Variety show and weekly instruction in music class, by our licensed music teacher, our students participate in other musical performances during the year. Performances during our annual Veterans Day program, Holiday Sing-Along, Literacy Night, and the Kindergarten promotion ceremony remind us each year that music truly brings us together and is a language we all understand.

Lakeview Elementary students also participate in a wide variety of activities and hobbies after their school day is over. Many students participate in 4-H programs, music and dance lessons, and both local and travel sports teams. Each year, Lakeview students are invited to join one of our Lakeview after school clubs. Currently, we offer Chess Club, Robotics Team, Running Club, and the Good-News Club. Lakeview Elementary is also an important community hub where many of our students spend time with clubs and teams such as the Boy Scouts, local youth sports teams, and Girl Scouts gather for weekly meetings, practice or special events.
