Professor Cindy Hmelo-Silver will lead the education research as part of a five-year, $20 million grant recently awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the NSF AI Institute for Engaged Learning. This will allow researchers to create artificial intelligence-enabled technology that supports student and teacher agency in narrative-centered learning environments. Hmelo-Silver is joined on the project team by Professor Gamze Ozogul and Assistant Professor Sijia Huang from the IU School of Education. In total, over $2 million of the grant will support efforts at IU.

IU School of Education students celebrated a special milestone last week when they received their official name badges during the Undergraduate Induction Ceremony. These badges will be used when they work in schools this year as part of their student teaching or practicum requirements.

The event celebrates the important milestone in the students’ journeys to earning their degree. For students in traditional teaching programs, this signifies the start of their field experiences. For Counseling and Student Services students, it marks the beginning of their internship.

For Aniya Burnett, it was a summer of adventure.

Burnett, a junior at the IU School of Education, spent three weeks of her summer in New Zealand as part of the Global Gateway for Teachers program. Burnett was among the first cohort of Counseling and Student Services majors to participate in Global Gateway under a new branch of the program now available to students pursuing the CASS major, making her experience even more special.
