It is with great sadness that we share that Ken Lee passed away unexpectedly on September 6, 2026, at the age of 79. A dedicated SSPA member since 1977, Ken received the association’s highest honor, the Vera Slater Service Award, in 2008.

He served as Affiliate President, SSPA Board member, and Men’s Education Team member, rarely missing an annual meeting.

From the Minnesota Beauty Show to INsalon, Kenny was always there to lend a hand. He never said no when help was needed and could always be counted on to make us smile and laugh. Ken was a one-of-a-kind person who loved being a hairdresser and deeply valued his association and friends.

Kenny, thank you for your years of service, friendship, and laughter. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten. You leave behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and friendship that will stay with us always.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜

As beauty professionals, we often build relationships with our clients that go beyond the service. A salon chair, treatment room, or nail station can become a place where someone feels comfortable, cared for, and seen.

That matters.

You don’t have to be an expert or know exactly what to say. Sometimes being a safe, nonjudgmental person who listens can make a difference.

This month, take a moment to:

💜 Know the resources available in your community.
💜 Consider keeping domestic violence resources somewhere discreet and accessible.
💜 Learn how to respond safely and appropriately if a client shares something with you.
💜 Remember that you never have to put yourself—or your client—at greater risk to help.

A little awareness. A little compassion. A safe place to land.

Those things matter.
