It’s officially the hottest US summer on the books, with extreme heat events expected to double or even triple by 2050. 📈🌡️

To help combat heat resilience in Indiana, assistant professor of informatics at IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering Dana Habeeb focuses her research on better understanding and predicting how temperatures vary across communities.

As part of this research, volunteers use special mobile heat sensors attached to bikes to ride around Bloomington and collect street-by-street heat data. 🚲

“We know that heat deaths are preventable,” Habeeb says. “If we take the appropriate actions and put the right strategies in place, we can reduce the risks associated with extreme heat and ultimately save lives.”

👋 Say hi to three Indiana University students just setting out on their Bloomington journeys.

Rebekah Arnold is a global media major (a new degree from the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies and The Media School at Indiana University) excited to dive into discussions about politics, history and current events at the Hamilton Lugar Living Learning Center.

IU’s wealth of classes and programming means that IU College of Arts and Sciences microbiology major Skyler Bielick can explore science and pursue classes in the arts like printmaking.

Lucy Miksza, a community health major at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington, gets a head start on her post graduate plans in her Professional Pathways in Community Health class, which will introduce her to the many career paths available in public health.

What do IU Bloomington, our upcoming football opponent and an IU alumna’s work in Indiana have in common? Bison. 🦬

As Indiana University welcomes the bison back as a symbol of IU Bloomington, and prepares to face the Howard University Bison this weekend — an IU alumna is helping bison thrive right here in Indiana. O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University alumna Alyssa Nyberg earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in environmental science at IU, helping her build a meaningful career in conservation. For 25 years, she has helped restore the 8,400-acre Kankakee Sands preserve, where a bison herd introduced in 2016 has grown from 23 to 90.

Her story is one example of how IU trains top talent: helping students find their purpose, develop expertise and put it to work.
